Actually you can do the map update while driving. Insert the first DVD and just drive your car like you do every day. If you shut down your car and the start it again it will continue the update.
This way you don't need to use any external power supply.

So I got mine installed, but it doesn't work.

The display never comes on and I get static out of the speakers, which went away after turning down the volume.

Here are a couple of shots of the back of the display before installing it. Should I be doing something with that little blue connector other than using it as a "dust cap"? I take it this is the CID CAN/power connector, correct?





Am I supposed to pull some of the pins from the connector shown in the lower right corner on the following shot and put them into the blue connector in order to power the HD display? If so, what are the pin-outs please? I skimmed back through this thread and I don't recall seeing any details about this.



And here's a shot of the back of the main unit just before pushing it into place. Note that there are 2 connectors left free. One went to the old display, the other went to that little external cooling fan on the old CCC.



The install was otherwise very easy. Here a shot of the final result without the wood trim put back on yet:



Now if I can just get that display powered up.

Moving the 4 power pins over to the new connector did the trick!

For others doing this, here are some detailed shots of the old and new connectors and pin-outs.

They wires are pin for pin from old to new connector as follows:

Pin 1 Red or Yellow
Pin 3 Brown
Pin 5 Black or Orange/Green
Pin 6 Yellow or Green

For M5 owners, I'm pleased to report the M-Drive screen is there, as is the HUD display setting and the HUD also functions 100%.







I have just one issue right now, and it basically makes the system unusable. The old iDrive knob moves from the very top selection to the very bottom selection no matter how slow I turn it. If I can get past this, I should be ready to rock. I suppose the only other option would be to complete the transformation and get the new iDrive controller.

Great success pclausen,
The modification looks great. The pre-LCI iDrive controller functionality is definately a big hindrance. I wonder if Nelson experienced the same effects with his 5 Series.

The idrive controller issue is weird, havent heard of anybody having that issue. Hopefully is something that can be fix via coding from Patryk!!!

There's a couple of guys in the US that already have the interface, im pretty sure borrowing an interface to code your car should not be a problem.

Thanks so much for posting these pics, too bad that I lost the 'first M5 race' but I hope I will have some time this afternoon to start the install.
