I thought there was construction and some closures on Ortega? Not sure if you can take it all the way through the 5 to the 15.

If you guys are planning on lunch around Julian, I do believe that it's bit of a drive from Ortega. The roads around Julian/Palomar would offer plenty of driving in itself. I have always wanted to try the apple pie in Julian.

I know Angeles Crest is pretty much blackonblack's backyard, but I wouldn't mind doing that road again or maybe try something new with the back roads around Julian. If we went with that route, we may have more of a chance of bringing out some san diego e60 owners. Either way, I would prefer somewhat of an early meeting time so as to avoid traffic.

As it turns out, I'm not sure if I can make the 24th. There's this meguiars detailing day that I signed up for a couple months ago and it just happens to fall on the same day. Hopefully I can make it out though.

Uh O. are there closure on Ortega? We should look into that and see. If not we can always switch to Angeles Crest.

Ya it is quite a long route. How long is too long for everyone?

From the Union Tribune:
2:15 a.m. April 10, 2006

LAKE ELSINORE – Starting Monday night after 9, state transportation workers will begin adding shoulders and replacing signs and guardrails along the rural two-lane Ortega (74) Highway, which links Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capistrano and Interstate 5 in Orange County.

The road will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. On the weekends, the hours will be 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Officials are starting the $3.85 million project for safety precautions along an eight-mile stretch, from Christianitos Road to the San Juan Creek Bridge in Orange County.

Motorists who live and work in the zone will be allowed on the street, but everyone else must take the long roundabout routes along Highway 91 into Corona or into Oceanside in San Diego County and across Highway 76 to Interstate 15.

Construction plans include adding shoulders along the stretch of road to give motorists an area to recover in case they need to swerve; putting noise strips on the center line; fixing draining and signs; replacing metal guardrails.

The road winds from Lake Elsinore around sheer cliffs, near waterfalls and past towering pines before linking up with Interstate 5. Officials estimate that up to 11,000 vehicles ply the roadway each day.

Between 2001 and 2004 there were 114 accidents and five fatalities on the stretch of road that will be widened.

A more ambitious and far more expensive safety project is expected to be started next year.
Since our ride would be east of Lake Elsinore into Julian, we will be fine no matter the time. The map below is what someone used as their Oretga trip. The trip is 110 miles and took 5 hours.

I've been looking over the Ortega Hwy from San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore vs Angeles Crest Hwy. It would appeart to me that Angeles Crest would be more of a scenic drive. Let's change to Angeles Crest Hwy.

Yeah, I agree. I don't mind doing Angelus Crest Hwy again. It's more fun, lots of photo op stop opportunities...especially like stopping at Mt Wilson...'cause of the even more winding road! The restaurant isn't too far past that and the whole drive and lunch doesn't take that long...just hope the road isn't closed due to an accident again! I'll just scope out another location for the Meet in the morning...the Starbucks in La Canada is too busy and we couldn't all park together.

Yes, it's official...ANGELUS CREST HWY. (Just want to clarify the spelling if anyone wants to look up the route.) I made the same assumtion with "Angeles". We just need to locate a better meeting spot for the morning! I'll also need to make a reservation for the restaurant up on the hill...we'll take a count again a little later.

FYI the restaurant on the mt. is Angelus Oaks Restaurant or Oaks restaurant. While we're up at Mt. Wilson...does anyone care to do a quick walk of the observatory? (Just an idea for the ones who've never been there?)
