Downshift. You must be in 3rd gear. I am usually in 2nd when going 35 unless I am just cruising and don't want power and want to conserve fuel. I do not like to get below 2,000 rpm and for maximum power/acceleration, down shift to where you are in the 3,500 to 4,000 rpm range when you want to hit the go petal. At that RPM, you will find there is no delay in power delivery, but a throw you in the back of the seat rush of acceleration.

Edit: I just looked and you have an automatic transmission. When cruising and anticipate the need for speed, keep in in DS mode. When I had my 540iA, I always kept it in DS when driving around town. DS holds lower gear longer. Or, trade your car in for a manual tranny.

LOL.. thanks for the tip on DS... I'm aware of it.. this is more an issue of bogging out...

I'm going to suggest my weirdo test again...

rev the car slowly in neutral. and kinda hold it at 1100 rpm and hold it at 1300 rpms and see how smooth or rough the engine is.

Our new 550 runs very rough on cold start up each morning (not that cold - located in So Cal). It is not like a higher idle - it is stumbling all over itself and sounds very sick. Once it has been driven - it runs excellent.

Went to dealer- they reprogrammed - and it is still doing that.

Anyone else experience this?

Kirk
Mine was the same. The dealer ran a bunch of tests and couldn't solve. They contacted "BMW headquarters" and were advised to change the lifters. Took 3 weeks in the shop because parts they needed had to come from Germany.......

Problem was solved though, no more rough idle.

OK boys and girls. spent some time with the regional people at BMW today. THey are WELL aware of the rough idle when first starting the 550i. I don't remember the specific technical jargon, but basically it boils down to this: The car runs very lean. this is how they can get better MPG for you and the EPA. Since startup consumes a large amount of gasoline, this is where the biggest savings come from. Once warm, about 30-40 seconds after starting, the roughness goes away.

Bottom line - nothing can be done about it.

However, in my case, I seem to also bogg down at traffic lights .. this seems unrelated.

anyone else?
Same thing I was told many months ago. Rough idle at cold start up while DME is gathering all the sensor data, True, have there have been additional and specific idle or run issues that required it to be addressed in software (DME updates) and certain VINS had an issue with valvetronic hardware. But, if the problem EXTENDS to other than the first 60-90 seconds of start then you may have a real issue that needs be addressed. The DME ought to be able to adjust to different fuel formulations, however, BMW does have a recommended group of TOP TIER gas and providers (bulletin on this somewhere - I can post of desired). Anybody that suspects gas should make extra effort to test theory in a controlled manner and post findings. I once assembled the CIPs that addressed the idle or rough running in another thread. CIP 20.00.00 addressed 4.8L engine idle, CIP 19.01 addressed loss of power while decelerating and turning or coming to a stop (specific to SMG and /or STEP trannies), CIP 17.01 addressed all VANOS engines rough run & hard to start issues, CIP 16.1 repeat of 19.1 (actually that would be the reverse wouldn't it).
