According to a couple of websites, if I get a hunting licence, I am allowed to buy long guns in certain states as a non-US citizen. Other than that, you're quite right. Sorry.

It still means I endure more checks to actually enter the country than a citizen would to buy a gun. Which seems somewhat backwards.

I don't have any statistics,

See John R. Lott, Jr.'s book, More Guns Less Crime

It is a good read for those interested in the gun issue in the US.

but guns have such huge potential for harm
The potential lies with the finger on the trigger.

Sorry if it seemed racist it was not intended that way.
I believe if you have a green card, you can own a gun, I am not totally clear on that. But to get a green card, you would have to be in the US for 2 or more years. So it is not a short flight over here, head to a gun store and a few days later you own one.

As for a hunting license I believe it is the same, however you may buy one after being a resident for 90 days.

Here is a link however it is not an official site, but regardless, someone did some homework.

From the stats I've found (slightly out of date admittedly), around 200 children die from gun accidents each year in the states (and presumably a fair number of adults as well - even your vice-president had a damn good go). The finger on the trigger is pretty irrelevant when they don't even know what the trigger does.

Of course there is potential for harm with everything - I used a knife to cut my sandwiches for lunch, but guns don't really have any other function - there just seems so little justification for just having them lying around. Especially when the main justification seems to be that some guys said that you could a couple of hundred years ago.

Either way, you'll find lobbyists for and against virtually anything, and you'll certainly find strong support for a ban on tobacco use. That said, tobacco users typically made their own choice, alcohol users typically made their own choice, but the person who gets killed by a firearm typically did not. The circumstances can't reasonably be analogized.

Whoa....to stand up for my profession, as a lobbyist for more than 25 years, I must take exception. I represent my client's interests for or against anything depending on who pays me the most....

Poor taste? You are saying the constitution gives you an ABSOLUTE INALIENABLE RIGHT to carry guns, and nothing can possibly ever change that. It also gives you the right to own slaves (and yes, I know it doesn't mention slavery directly, but it's pretty clear nonetheless), and yet that was abolished some 140 years ago. My point is that your constitution isn't a fixed, absolute document, never to be changed. It should move with the times. You're the one who is picking and choosing which parts suit you.

Personally, I think someone carrying a deadly weapon in their car is in poor taste. And saying that you could never live somewhere that doesn't allow that "freedom" makes me want to vomit, frankly. Personally I'd rather have the freedom to overtake somebody without worrying if they had an argument with their wife that morning.
Someone's jealous! And no one said the constituion was a fixed document, or we wouldn't have the 2nd amendment or the other 26. Carrying a gun in my glovebox means I have poor taste....hmmm? Have you seen my glovebox? It's M style!

Go vomit and maybe you'll feel better and loosen up. Thanks for the donation!

Umm you can't just walk into Wal Mart and "buy a gun", first of all, I do not believe Wal Mart sells guns any longer.
Although maybe in some states?
Either way, there is a Background check required
I also believe NON USA citizens(or not having a green card) cannot own a Gun in the USA, much less purchase one.
I have a CHL and when I purchase my guns there are no background checks and I could leave with any civilian gun the same hour. I guess it because of the extensive background check for the CHL. Its pretty convenient.
