I paid my specialst to do the job and it took him 1 hour. Amazing.

Thanks Anzafin for your brilliant tutorial.

Have we ever heard of an updated flap destroying a cylinder/turbo?

Regards,

Neil.D

Did mine this weekend. Got the swirl flap blanking plates from PMW.

Thanks for the guide!

Quick question though:

I ordered both sets of swirl flaps form PMW and the ones I used were the larger type. The swirl flaps look to be held in place by the metal torx screws (on the spindle). I'm not sure if the flaps themselves were metal or plastic (as they were covered in black). So I was just wondering which type were fitted (updated or old version)?

Car is a 54 plate (delivered in December and new from factory). It has a partical filter as well.

Thanks,

That "54 plate" tells nothing to me, but I think you had the "updated" swirl flaps if you have a particulate filter.

Btw, all swirl flaps are metal. The "updated" flaps only have a rubber covering on them.

Oh right, well I'm sure I saw a rubber cover on them (orange one I think). How is the rubber cover supposed to help? Stop vibrations?

Ok thanks Antti,

Oh and the 54 plate means it was registered after September 2004 (but before March 2005). It's a UK thing and I should have just posted the date of production instead, which I think will be November (but can't say for certain at the moment).

Did this on my 54 plate 530d today. Worked a treat, no problems and very easy to do! Thanks.

Hi.

I recently bought my first BMW car, a 2001 525DA Tourer Automatic with 191,000 kms on the clock. Well looked after but not by BMW.

Have spent most of the afternoon reading about the swirl flap problem and wondered if it also affected the early models like mine? Anyone know?

Any info appreciated and thanks in advance.

By the way..excellent DIY ino Anzafin.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

The swirl flap problem affects especially the earlier models (higher mileage at these days). You should remove the flaps, it's easy.
I recently saw a DIY especially for the E39, even though you should be ok with my instructions too. I'll post the link here if I can find it anyway!
