Another thought on if those without 6DC will need a s/w update...

My car has 6DC preparation, but no 6DC presently. If I wanted to install a 6DC does my iDrive just discover it after I hook up the 6DC or do I need a s/w update for it to be discovered? If it does not need to be programmed to discover the 6DC, then my guess is that it will not need to be programmed to discover the iPod unit. Of course, an MP3 usable CIP version is a given.

You WILL need an update (or at least reprogramming the unit, but I think the dealer always install the latest version when doing this). The iDrive cannot discover the unit itself.

I just called the dealer and order the kit. Without a part number, he couldn't figure out what the cover was. Do you know that part number? Thanks.
The part no. for the plastic cover for the hole to cover the former CD player is 51-16-7-114-806.

Thanks cobradav. Just ordered the cover. Plan on installing the whole kit this weekend. Hopefully it works.

Anyone have TIS 51 16 360 and 65 11 070 ?

Here is one of them for the glove box. The other is for an E46 and not close to e60 (not in glove box)

Maybe Rudy has the same instructions for E60??

One DIY said" The connection itself is simple: unplug 6 disk player, plug cable into interface, plug ipod cable into interface. All the work is in removing the glove compartment and running the cable through a hole you drill in the top of the glove box."

Another on an e63 "I read the other DIY instructions and started thinking this could be even easier. I popped open the tabs on the CD Changer and loosened the screws. It popped right out without removing the glove box. Then I put felt on one side and velcro on the other, then put the other piece of velcro on the CD Changer carrier. Plugged it in, tested, and it worked perfectly. this approach takes 15 - 20 minutes."

It sounds like these are only available from the dealer, is that right? At least for 2004+?

I'm a bit confused...

I've seen the install instructions at the top of this thread and the brochure in this another thread http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=24556&st=90

I emailed one BMW dealer for a price and the p/n in the install instrustoins, 65 41 0 415 655, is supposedly only valid in Europe according to BMW.

Now the E60 p/n from the brochure, 65 11 0 403 651, is valid in the US.

Corbadav, you mentioned that several folks have alreayd done installs. Have they done them with 65 11 0 403 651 using the install instructions you provided which reference p/n 65 41 0 415 655?

Thanks,
Tom
OK i did the IPOD interface install on my 07 550 april 06 build last week. I have L7 w/o 6 cd but 6 cd prewired. It still needs coding from my dealer which i have a "while you wait" appointment tomorrow morning.

The part you need is 65 11 0 403 651. Took me 1.2 hours but I had no idea or experience removing the glovebox. The glovebox removal instructions in this thread, although helpful are not complete. These instructions will remove the door to the glovebox but not the glovebox itself. Its not real tough.

Once the glovebox door is removed, you must remove the glovebox.
There are about 4 screws along the top edge which are clearly visible. There are 2 screws near the hinges which are visable under the dash. There are another 2 screws on the bottom on the far left and right side.

The screw on the rightside is covered by a piece of trim that comes up from the door sill. you have to pull this piece of trim aside to get to the right screw.

You pull the glovebox out. Its relatively simple after that. you have to drill a 3/4 inch hole in a plastic top of the glovebox body.
And you have to locate the prewire. The x-18180 wire plug is clipped to a metal holding prong at the top of the glovebox opening in the dash. The optical wires are in a black loop and need a small piece of the black tape removed to reveal a tiny fitting that joins the two optical wires together. Remove the joiner and take the two optical wires and insert them into a small supplied fitting that then fits into the x-18180 that in turn fits into the back of the ipod adaptor. You take the supplied ipod wire and run it thru the hole in the glovebox and take the non ipod fitting end and also snap that into the back of the ipod adaptor.

Reinstall the glovebox. Done... Dont over force anything because you are dealing with small plastic parts.

Don't over bend the optical wires cause that wont allow the signal to get through.

I did the cell phone eject box project and this was easier.

Picked my interface up from the dealer yesterday and had it installed in 45 minutes. Did not disconnect the battery. Removed the glove box door, but did not have to remove the entire glove box. Works fine. Ordered the cover for the spot where the CD changer used to be, which should be a simple install.
