I guess I should claifiy. I live in KS outside of KC. My commute is 95% highway non stop at 80-85mph. My little intown driving is not real stop and go. This car is engineered wery well. Trust me I dont baby this car I push it. On average I go 501 miles on a tank just regular commute and weekend intown driving.

The 7 gas mileage is best at about the range you're talking about. The sweet spot I've found is 75-80 I can get up to 31mpg. above eight I get about 25-27mpg. So the commute you have is pretty much the best case scenario for a commute.

How about the next generation 5 series with their efficient dynamics tech?

Perhaps not entirely relevant as you guys do not have access to the diesel version; I achieve 760-800 miles from a full tank in my 730d Sport. Driving conditions are similar to KU530, plenty of cruising speeds circa 70-80mph - these cars are engineered for the highway................

My parents currently drive the 2G E65 740i Luminance Individual and they get around 14.9L/100km! And this is mostly suburban driving!

I am going throught the same delima, with me and my wife. I want the 7(doesnt have to be a new one) and she wants the X5. I have never bought a CPO or even a used one for that matter. I usually wait to the next year comes out then get the previous year, or better yet when the bodystyles switch, that makes the price decrease. I just dont know if i like the new body style, but i know i want 7. Im a 30 something along with my wife, with 2 you ng kids. So unlike the tan interior we have now, i will be getting a darker color in the x5, and tan in the 7( Kids not ride in the 7). So i would agree go with the 7. Seeing how im in Afghanistan once i get back ill go and test drive the new 7 since i havent seen them in person.
