It's simpler than that - commercial greed.

AFAIKin UK tax is no different between the two fuels and garages are setting the price levels people are prepared to pay.

Until there is a consumer revolution nothing will happen.

right see your point.
but If i lived in london then I world get the eletric car for day to day us. Its all free

I dont get why people keep comparing the 535d to the 545.IMO the equivalent petrol is the 530i.

It is unfair for the 535d as it is a really great car.Its 1500cc difference. When they make 540d or even a 545d if they do then we can compare and see.But like that? The difference is huge.

BMW 530i Engine

Code: N52B30
Type: 3.0 Liter I6
Max Power: 190 kW (255 hp)
Max Torque: 300 Nm (220 lb-ft)

BMW 535d Engine

Code: M57TU
Type: 3.0 Liter Twin-Turbo Diesel
Max Power: 200 kW (265 hp)
Max Torque: 560 Nm (413 lb-ft)

BMW 545i Engine

Code: N62B44
Type: 4.4 Liter V8
Max Power: 245 kW (325 hp)
Max Torque: 450 Nm (330 lb-ft)

That's why they compare them.

I'm sure now if you look not even carefully you'll see that the 530i doesn't begin to figure.

Yes indeed i agree on that but...
The category of the cars is judged by the number and the configuration of the cylinders and the displacement. At least this is how i think it

4 years ago, I said I would never buy a diesel. Noisy, smelly, poor performance.

20 months ago I bought the 530D, despite Diesel fuel being more expensive in the UK than petrol.

The 530D is only slightly more expensive than the 530i
has vastly improved fuel consumption.
Produces much more power where it is really useful, at mid range acceleration for overtaking.
Is noisier than the 530i only when cold and initial acceleration from low speed.
Diesel engines are renowned for longetivity
residual prices for diesels are much higher than petrol.

When they hit the US many will be surprised at what they get, don't knock it till you have used one long term.

Hope not.

Why would one need a heavy diesel V8 in the E60 when about the same power
can be delivered with a more than 200 pounds lighter six-in-line?

You should test drive a 535dA!
i take it you havent driven both then

With a 20% price differential and another 20% (or more) consumption differential, I'm not surprised. Plus, depreciation on a V8 is HUGE in Europe.

And after, when I park the car in my garage I am not lack of breathe .
No, please keep breathing. All that nice CO. Does you good. Really. It does not smell, however.

BTW - in terms of smell, I'd rather be behind my 535d than my 535i (E39) when cold. Warm engine - not a jot of difference

Well, then the most logical comparison for the 535d would be to the M5 (520 Nm / 383 lb ft). :'(

Maximum performance (in acceleration and max speed) is roughly proportional to max power, not to max torque. Torque - or rather torque spread at the wheel (including gearing) - goes a long way towards in-gear pick up, which means driveability.

The fact of the matter is that the 530i should be the closest E60 comparable to a 535d, but ends up rather badly, so there is not even a point. The 535d does surprisingly well in all respects compared (performance-wise) to the 545i, which is why the comparison is interesting, if ultimately predestined in its conclusions.

For the pedants among us I should've not edited out my original additional emboldening of the power ratings for the 530i and 535d when illustrating why a comparison was of interest.

I had hoped that was the blindingly obvious significant combinitorial factor.

I have been proved wrong - not for the first time.
