Not sure there's any need to reopen the tired old "which is faster" discussion!! Let's just be glad that the diesels are on their way - I'm actually most looking forward to seeing some of the more misguided misperceptions about diesels get shot down once BMW can unleash them over here

We're prepared for all the 550i owners to be unimpressed.

I guess M5 owners are rather unimpressed with the 550i.

Why the snotty comments? :'( Perhaps you misread my post? FWIW I suspect that 545/550 owners in the US will be very impressed with BMW's diesels and are highly likely to be potential customers (I'm personally in that category). And I suspect that most M5 owners do quite like the 550, too.

Ipp, how many times have you tried 545i (as you like, SMG or steptronic) ?
I have tried 535d, a pair of times .

Are you searching for an argument ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tw6rWPMbLE

http://www.auto.cz/videa/stream.php?stream=41

And after, when I park the car in my garage I am not lack of breathe .
Conclusion : if you don't run over 20k km/year the 535d is useless ..
Useless Unless (about 90% of people I think):

You buy It privately:
FAR better Residuals than petrol BMWs
longevity of diesel engines
Also the longer service schedules and lower tax.

you have it for buissness:
ALOT lower CO2 for BMW diesels than BMW petrols means ALOT less tax (crippling in the UK)
better residuals means lower leasing price when leasing can have more options.

Driving:
alot more torque (Meaning it pulls from a standstill with so much less effort).
eaiser cruising (my humble 525D manages 100mph at 2300RPM!)
faster real world acceleration 50-75 in gear etc for diesels
Petrol is lighter
petrol wins if you 'RAG' it

my concluision:
for most people buying this car i think diesel is the best choice.
If you have money to burn and dont do an awful lot of miles then petrol.
I test drove a 525I immdediatly after the 525D and although the petrol just had the edge when you floored it at lower speeds, in all other comparisons the 525D won easily. How often do you race from 0-60? for me never. I'm not saying diesel is better, afterall opinions are opinions. I advise people who bash diesels and not driven one ( a few on this forum) to drive one.
just my 0.2P

I dont get why people keep comparing the 535d to the 545.IMO the equivalent petrol is the 530i.

530i---> 530d

BMW 535d Engine

Code: M57TU
Type: 3.0 Liter Twin-Turbo Diesel
Max Power: 200 kW (265 hp)
Max Torque: 560 Nm (413 lb-ft)

The M5 has less torque than 535d ... Thus 535d is faster than M5 ?

Ferrari F430 : 465 Nm
550i : 480 Nm

550i is faster than 430 ?
The 430 does 3.6-3.7s on 0-62 MPH, 550i 5.5s .
0-200 kmh : 12.9s for the F430, 18-19s for 550i .

Destroys? Maybe.
Sure, not "maybe" .

BTW I've discovered grass is green and water is wet.
What a man!

But your point is?

My point is that if you don't have economical problems 'at the pump' a 545i is always better than a 535d .
Especially SMG .

Diesels have ALWAYS shorter gears than petrol, simply ...

530i---> 530d

I said that i compare the cars by the number of cylinders the configuration of them and the displacement.

530i ----->3000cc
530d----->3000cc
535d----->3000cc

So the most powerful I6 petrol is the 530i and the most powerful I6 diesel is the 535d.So we compare those two.Thats just the way i think.

About the SMG.It is all about what people like more.Just because you have it doesnt mean its the best I was also considering getting SMG but couldnt find one to test drive so i got the steptronic which by the way i like VERY VERY much

BMW use the same box for petrol and diesel. the diesel boxes are beefed up to handle extra torque however...
