Sorry for my (bad) english .. I mean that diesel engine have always shorter gear, thus you remain impressed by diesel engine ... But if you have on the side a petrol, it is faster

This bit I do get. theres no doubting that petrol is ultimately faster in the lower gears and has a higher rev range. But this is my point, peak torque and power are much lower down the rev range than on a petrol. With petrol you have to 'plant' you foot much further to give the car the same twist of speed as a diesel because the power is higher up.
Choose the Steptronic or use the SMG in Drive mode : kickdown

so would you mind explaining in what way the 545i is the most blindingly obvious comparable? Clearly, a petrol engine revving at 6500+ rpm with roughly the same peak power as a Diesel revving at 4200 is going to have a lower torque. It is equally obvious that it will have a shorter gearing. What is NOT obvious is that the Diesel will outperform it significantly on most dimensions.

Why the snotty comments? :'( Perhaps you misread my post? FWIW I suspect that 545/550 owners in the US will be very impressed with BMW's diesels and are highly likely to be potential customers (I'm personally in that category). And I suspect that most M5 owners do quite like the 550, too.
In the UK if fuel prices and stupid depreciation didn't affect buying decisions then I wonder who would've bought a 550i instead of a 535d?
I can't imagine everyone buys a diesel for its lower CO2 emissions (other than getting a tax break).
