Perhaps, the cars were tested at a high elevation facility to make the numbers look more even

BTW, I have nothing against the diesel. I would love to buy the 535d in US, if it is few thousand dollars less than 545i and available now.

Do you believe the independent UK tests of DMS remaped 535d with 0-60mph in 5.5s and 1.5 seconds taken off the 0-100mph time?

If you do, are you still so sure the 545i would be "left behind in any situation"? If so, lets do that test ;-)

I'm not a "diesel freak" by the way - my other car is a modded, highly tuned (200bhp / litre, 400bhp) petrol turbo, so I see the advantages - and differences - of both :-)

Merv, I suspect that Audi would beg to differ - A8 4.0TDi twin turbo...

Those times you found look like BS to me!!! A US magazine (Road and Track) just tested the 545 and got 0-60 in 5.2 ( which is the lowest I have seen, but I have seen a bunch of 5.3 and 5.4 times too). 545 was stock, no aftermarket remapping needed. So count me in on the test as well!!!

Auto or manual? The 535d only comes in auto so it has to like for like.

Clive forgot the Audi. 535d is fastest two stage turbo then.

I have nothing against Diesels either. I think it is a shame, that the car manufacturers still refuse to make Diesels that doesn't harm the environment, but that's another story.
A Diesel is fine for me. I would buy it, if I would need to drive a lot and were looking to reduce my cost. But it wouldthen not be a 535d.

So, NOW you want to compare a regular 545 against a REMAPPED 535d. That's comparing apples and oranges. Then you have to compare the remapped 535d and a remapped 545, and the 545 will win. A remapped 545 has 495Nm, that means it gains 45Nm, and it gains 25 PS, going from 333 to 358.

Hey, you really want to test you 535d against my 545i ?
Ask some ppl who have seen me driving before you make such offers...

You know what? I really don't care if my 545i is faster or not, but I am sick of those discussions "My Diesel is faster because it has more torque". If I would like to have a car that is faster than others, I would have bought something else.
And the torque doesn't make the car fast... my tow truck has definately more torque than a 535... But it's damn slow...

Then Iceman, you need to learn why. Read this article.

Article: Why do big diesel engines and race car engines have such different horsepower ratings?

Maybe you're not taking the time to read my posts properly, or you would have seen:

Now, imagine (and I think it's an entirely fair comparison given the price differential between 535d and 545i) how these times will look for a remapped 535d...

...where I made it clear I thought that was a fair comaprison. Even remapped, the 535d costs nowhere near a 545i. So if anything, you have the advantage. Ok, so you gain 45Nm, the diesel gains 126Nm.

Yes, as I said:

I really want to find myself next to a 545i on a 1/4 mile drag strip - not because I think it's a foregone conclusion - I think it would be a REALLY interesting test :-)

If you take the time to read my responses properly, nowhere have I said as you suggest:

In fact, I think I point out quite clearly I don't know which would be faster - and that's my whole point - you've been certain from the start that a 545i is quicker that a 535d in every possible way ("Well, I will leave you behind! In ANY situation!") and all I'm saying is that I've yet to see the proof of that. So yes, as per my post above, this is a test I would like to do. And I don't see for a moment how your driving prowess would have any effect on straight line acceleration. And if it did, we'd be no longer comparing cars, but drivers.

So - yes, bring it on - not because I think I know that a 535d is faster than a 545i, but because I don't know and I think we'd all love to see how they compare.
