i'll just throw in my 2 cents while i'm here... i personally like diesels because they are much more fuel efficient and imo are pretty cool. no comparison to the F-350 4 door diesel I used to have lifted 8" with 24.5s, but same concept. If an e60 came to the states diesel i would definately consider it.

I dunno about that, but sorry anyways for misreading/misundersatnding your post.

I am in a real bad mood today and will have some fistfighting with my dealer and BMW tomorrow. (Not about diesel engines though)...
I am just way too frustrated today... Maybe I should just go to bed, but I'm so angry I will probably not sleep the entire night...

Sorry, man...

Its the mid range acceleration that counts. The 530d is 2 seconds quicker 50mph - 75mph in 4th gear (manual transmission) than the 530i (first e60 model)

I don't want to start a diesel is better than petrol argument but just wait and see what you think when you get them in the States.

I used to be a petrol head and then tried a 530d - I was astounded never looked back since.

This is what diesel guy always say, however this is an unfair comparison. First, the diesel gear box has a lower gear ratio meaning that it runs at higher rpms in a certain gear compared to a petrol version in the same gear at the same speed. Second, if the diesel is doing 50 mph in fourth gear it has like 40 % of its rev range left, which will of course be very powerful. In contrast the petrol car will do the acceleration in the middle of its rev range, where there is not so much power available. Thus probably a comparison between petrol 3rd gear and diesel 4th gear would be much more appropriate. The diesel may be faster anyway but the margin would be a lot smaller.

I don't think the diesel has lower gearing than the petrol varients.
In 6th gear with the autobox at 70mph the revs are 1,700rpm. This sounds like very high gearing to me. What rpm does the the 3.0 / 4.4 petrol show at 70mph in 6th?

If We look 530 i/d d have lower first to fourth, fifth is same(1:1) and 6th is longer.
