The BMW announcement of their F1 withdrawl is no suprise. At one time they had the most powerful engine in F1 and a good chassis partner in Williams. Then Marion Theissen's ego grew larger than Bernie's and Max's put together. So he convinced the board to drop those English guys who were holding them back and spend millions of Euros on a second-tier team in Switzerland. The result is that resources were stretched so the engines lost their edge and reliability and the Sauber chassis remained second rate. The record is multiple wins for BMW-Williams and one for BMW Sauber. Well done, Mario!

Meanwhile, the Williams car is powered by the Toyota lump and regularly out-paces the Toyota factory cars. Think what could have been done with the BMW engine in this year's Williams chassis with Nico driving. I put most of the blame for BMW's F1 failure on Mario's door step. He oversold his and Sauber's competence and convinced the Board to throw away millions on his ego trip. To be honest, the Board was easily convinced and wanted to believe that the BMW-Williams success was solely due to BMW engines.

It's a sad day for F1, BMW and all of us that wanted them to succeed. That's my 2 cents.

I wonder if their withdrawal from F1 is also somehow related to M5's V10 engine production and discontinuation thereof...

So he is, what a great news day in Formula 1.

Massa will be fully OK, BMW will leave the F1's, but Schumi's in!

Now we see a real battle between Kimi and Schumi.

What a show!

You are right. Michael Schumacher is returning due to loyalty to the team. Thats just awesome. Despite being 40yrs old, the whole media will be focused on him. Goes to show what he has done for F1 in the years gone by. Something no other driver today can do and will ever do.

People can call him what they like but frankly his skill behind the wheel will be legendary.

cheers

Yep, and fine by me as long as he doesn't stay. He should be up among the leaders, and even win one or two because the car is obviously better now (even though some will be quick lay any/all success at feet of the great master ).....Ferrari goes well in Brazil, he could win there. Vettle is likely the biggest looser here.

No, BMW just need to save some money. Current F1 cars have a 2.4 l V8!?
BMW F1 racing can go, lots of other racing will continue, but in the long run...

I'm only concerned about the materials to be used in the new F10 etc. cars.
If they save too much on them, the cars will be crap.

Finally.

Now, we need to get the Renault suspension overturned so that Alonso can drive (no clue who his teammate will be), and it should all be good in Valencia!

Yeah that guy is a true legend. Really looking forward to see what he can do with the Ferrari - I don't expect him to win races right from the beginning, but am sure he'll be back in the top flight. Maybe F1 could be worth watching again.

Sorry that BMW quits after this season though....
