I test drove a manual and a sport auto and on the test drive the manual felt better BUT it seems most people prefer the sport auto and the increased steering feel offered by the toggle switch next to the gear selector.. I ended up ordering the manual and spending the extra on some wood for the dash and the navigation package but am now wondering if I have done the right thing!!
The wheels, suspension, and general build quality of the car mean that the ride quality is light years ahead of my E60. Much of the roughness of poor road surfaces is unfelt inside the car. The steering feel is less in the F10 than the E60, but that is a part of being better insulated from the outside world. So for regular driving the car is brilliant.

I guess what you really want to know is, what is it like when you push the car hard. Very good. I would suggest that there may be slightly more initial body roll than in the E60, but if you believe that the BMW engineers know what they are doing, and press on, the car handles exceptionally well. The steering is as quick as you'd expect, and roundabouts can be crossed at high speeds. I used to purposely try to get the back end of my E60 to break away. Given that I've just parted with £28k of my own money, I've not been too reckless, but I am more than happy with the standard setup.

After 2800 miles the car's averaged 47.2 mpg. On longer journeys, Cardiff to Guilford, and Cardiff to Birmingham, cruising at 85mph, the car averaged 50.1mpg and 51.2mpg. But if you put your foot down a lot the mpg will fall closer to 39.

Thanks DeepGreen? very useful comments and reassuring that the standard suspension works well. I ended up test driving a sport auto F10 520d today for a few hours and have gone for the Sport auto in lieu of the sat nav I had previously ordered.
