I watched Fifth Gear on Five this week - the crash they did with children in the back row of a people carrier rammed behind by a lorry...

Yeah I saw 5th gear and when you see how close those seats are to the rear window it was obvious what was going to happen.

Kind of makes me think any MPV will be the same and rear most passengers become expendable!!

Oh well at least the grandparents have bus passes

As I have been saying already......

Watch - my point shown very clearly, and very graphicaly

I don't think a motorcycle crash-test would be any less relevant.

I get your point but I don't think that rinky-dink thing they smashed up is very comparable to an E61 in an accident.

My main hesitation in pursuing a 7-seat conversion, aside from the practical matter of space, is occupant safety.

Footage of an e61 getting slammed from behind would be interesting. My hunch is passengers #6 & #7 would be in the crumple zone... but I'm not sure the Top Gear footage tells us anything about our cars.

You dont have to convince anyone here apart from yourself mate, so crack on if you think its worth the risk

PS.

Dont confuse the trashy 5th gear with Top Gear lol

chesney72, did you ask your BMW dealer what they recommend? If they cannot help, they can contact BMW in Munich for advise on this. (My dealer contacted BMW Munich with regards to spacers on my new Touring, so they do have this service available to them within the company.)

Wow, I thought Top Gear was trashy... you mean 5th gear is worse?

I'm not convinced it's worth the risk. However, watching a tin-can fold up doesn't convince me it's risky. Footage of an E61 crumpling where it is designed to crumple would be much more compelling.

I think you're on the right side of the discussion and I have no interest in being on the wrong side of the discussion, but the clip you posted really showed a different class of vehicle, one that I think any of us would expect to fare poorly compared to a 5-series in any type of collision.

Cheers!
