My Ride: E61 sold nice E91 335i Sport Touring now
Default

Originally we were going to get an audi a6 but thankfully I talked the wife out of this I'm sure they came with an option to fit an additional 2 seats in the boot and wonder if its possible for the e61?

Got 3 kids under 4 and its a pain that we can't take the grandparents along on trips out and have to take 2 cars!

I refuse to buy a people carrier though

I don't think that BMW makes one, you could get a Volvo V70.

As well as the 530D E61 we've got a Ford S-Max 2.5T. It's very good. Handles very well and is pretty quick (it does have 216bhp) plus has 7 seats.

I'd suggest getting rid of the kids before suggesting you change to a Volvo V70

Do Volvo fit these as standard or do they have them fitted by an after-market company. If its the later, you could find out who does this and see if they could offer a solution for your E61? (The same obviously applies to all car manufacturers that offer seats in the boot)

I wouldn't place my child in the crumple zone of my car, but thats me, each to their own

I completely sympathise with your problem of course, I just wonder if people really look at what risk they place their kids at when they place their childrens faces against the back window of ANY supposed 7 seaters......even the "factory" built 7 seaters are damn right dangerous after thoughts........

I had two V70's they were ok cars but don't drive like a BMW.

Volvo just updated the body style but did not improve the suspension, i think my 98 V70 handle better than the 2001 or the current model.

Im not that keen however about putting kids in the boot!

The same thought went through my mind, however how much of that area is "crumple zone" This is possibly something that BMW could provide feedback on, because they do offer the 3rd row of seats as an option on the X5.

That's an interesting point! Maybe it's crash tested with that option and deemed suitable? Or they just rely on being hit in the back by a smaller car...?

About the V70 - yes there were some articles about the child seat option (OEM accessories) but after being criticized for the lack of safety having children in the back, and also that the comfort with those hild seat were less than recomendable I haven't seen that option for many years. Maybe Volvo, being cautious when it comes to safety, didn't want a debate on this subjecty and simply removed this accessory?

Anyway, if the need is only popping up now and then, I suggest you hire a 7-seater for the few occasions when it is needed. No reason to drive around with a lot of empty space.

Ultimately I guess it just depends on how close to the rear window they are, as the E61 boot is quite large im guessing it will be better that many so called proper people carriers like the Zafira or Focus Smax, in those the kids faces really are against the back window on the last row of seats ?
