Thanks for the DIY hermann.
I assume dealership's statement to be incorrect unless proven otherwise. Partly due to bad experience I have had before.

Looking at the ETK there is no relevance with active steering at all. Ask them when you order new steering column is that a different part number from your current one? If yes then is that a new revision of old part number or it has paddle shift support. Ask them to share part number. No where the paddle shifter comes in the way to steering. For mounting purpose only its using the steering wheel and its connected by SZL (again due to steering wheel). No other relevance.

Reading the latest shared DIY pdf, it says make following connection:

1) Install 1 wire on pin 12 of SZL connector (X1880) and run to ground
2) Install 1 wire on pin 13 of SZL connector (X1880) and run to connector X6031 in ebox to pin 11

I always believed that two wires will connect to two wires in the e-box X6031 connector. What is the purpose of connecting it to the ground. Looking at the WDS diagram here it seems two cables needs to go from SZL to the e-box. I am confused, please suggest your finding. WDS could be wrong here.

Sorry, just saw the SIB looks like WDS is wrong here.

This is the drivers side (UK car) both sides need to be removed

This is what you will see under the filter:

Then under the filter (drivers side) there is the master cylinder, you can see my new orange wire from the SZL:

I sleeved the wire with some black pvc sleeving to protect it and give it the oem look, this wire has to be routed across the top of the engine to the ebox (I havent got that far yet:

This is the ebox on a right hand drive car, you can see connector X6031 top middle with the red and blue wires:

Here is connector X6031 again with the plug removed and in view, you can see the spare space (pin 11) where your wire goes to:

Many thanks for the pics, what kinds of warnings are on iDrive?
Clear all error from INPA/DIS. Is ebox on passenger side?

I have 'engine fault - reduced power' and 'fuel pump fault' as well as various service due warnings although nothing is due and there doesnt appear to be any problems with the car/engine. I think they are bogus warnings.
The ebox is on the passenger side yes, I just found it easier to run the new cable from the drivers side grommet rather than dismantle the whole dashboard.
Thanks for the link which may come in useful. I have ordered what I believe to be the right parts from rswww.com for pennies, so I'll see if they fit first.
