New iPod interface avaliable for the 3,5,6, and 7 Series
This thread has a video showing how the device works and is therefore different
than the thread above in that it provides more information.

Yo, there's already a 5-page thread on this topic... See the link above.
And you arrive at the conclusion that your CD changer will go to waste based on what information? There is nothing in the provided information that says you will lose your CD player. As far as the so called compressed audio format of the iPod is concerned nothing in the information said that the iPod will become anymore more than what it is, so you offer a mute argument.

totally agree with you... AND I am pretty sure that my cd changer will go to waste, because I cannot see a way how i could control that as soon as the ipod interface is installed.
so maybe high def radio, but, because of the inferiour compressed audio format of the likes of the ipod, (meaning inferiour to cd sound) definitly no high def recorded sound

Just in case you didn't notice this is a BMW forum

They've created an interface between the existing CD changer function and the iPod - that's why you'll lose the CD Changer capability. But I guess the capacity of the iPod outweighs the 6 CDs...
So when you select 'CD4' on your iDrive the sent signal is mapped to the 'select by genre' function on the iPod. iDrive knob signals are also mapped appropriately...
Therefore, in this configuration BMW should apply a change to their software that allows you to switch proper iPod functions on screen - this wouldn't be exactly hard!

agreed, it seems so odd to invest in all this expensive high tech MOST fibre bus and I-drive technology if they are only going to do what they did in the E39....emulate a dumb old redundant cd changer.
I guess it just indicates BMW still haven't made the leap from brilliant and innovative hardware engineering to software. I've worked with code jockeys in the past that given the source code and specs could write something better than this in their sleep.
I'm veering towards the Dension, at least it appears to have a lowly switch to retain the CD changer.

Does anyone know if this will be availiable for older e60s?
>What do you really expect from MSFT?
I'm not sure you can blame them entirely , if they did it for FIAT you'd think they could manage it for BMW!

"Music played from a device plugged in through a USB port. The system can play audio from a range of devices and in a variety of formats, including Windows Media and MP3. "
>Exactly my question. And also, I can't figure out if you buy hardware (to connect iPod) on top of this download, and is this able to be downloaded at dealer if I am a ludite?
I think it will be backward compatible with all E60s since it is nothing other than pretending to be a CD changer (whick AFAIK was supported by the very first E60). I think it will be a small few bits of hardware just like the one on the E39 with an I-pod lead in the glove box, I'd be surprised if there is any SW to be installed on the car itself.
