Hey guys. I want to thank iceman for letting me dyno his car. I got a chance to run the car pretty hard today (18 back to back to back runs).

Runs 1-5: stock with AFE intake. Ambient 78, IAT at idle 121. Max 256whp.

Runs 6-8: stock w/ K&N filter. Ambient 79m IAT at idle 82. Max 267whp.

Runs 9-11: stock w/ K&N filter + RPi V1 scoop. Ambient 80. IAT at idle 82. Max 264whp.

Runs 12-15: stock w/ K&N filter + RPi V1 scoop modified. Ambient 80. IAT at idle 81. Max 267whp. Max gain + 2whp and +5wtq.

I was pretty upset about the numbers so we will be doing more development work on the E60 scoop. Those of you who have purchased the scoop already will receive a FREE replacement when we release V2 for the 550. Our goal was to get a minimum of 5whp gain.
I understand that different dyno machines will yield different results, but your results are dramatically different from mine.

Yours is the only other 550i dyno I have seen so not much to compare with.

Looking at runs 6-8, the car actually LOST WHP when the scoops were placed (runs 9-11). With modified scoops, it really didn't make any WHP compared to runs 6-8. Hope RPI can make V2 work for the E60.

What type of dyno are you running on? Dynojet usually reads significantly
higher than a dynojet (i.e. load bearing vs intertial measurments).

Also, on top of this there are other factors such as operator, atmospheric
conditions, perhaps even calibration issues. Yes, there are SAE correction
factors applied to help reduce variations BUT this can only account for
pressure, temperature, and some assumed mechanical efficiencys. This
cannot account for what the ECU does to adapt to "harsher" environments.

I feel that if you want the best comparison against another posted dyno/car
you need to run on the same dyno, same day, same operator, and with the
minimum amount of time in between runs.

It sounds bleak but it's what I believe to be necessary. I've personally grown
to accept that dynos are best for before/after testing of mods. If you use it
for anything else you'll find that yourself going crazy (trust me, I've been there).

Thanks Tony. This whole AFE thing has been pretty "entertaining". I
feel bad for the guys who feel cheated but these are the things we
must face when modding. Not everything works out. Although a
small consolation I guess be thankful that this mod was only a few
hundred dollars vs a few thousand.

Here's an interesting article on hot air under the hood and construction of an airbox to
deal with these issues:

http://autospeed.com/cms/A_110281/article....?popularArticle

There's an interesting comment in there that can lead to a do-it-yourself
test on the efficiency of the exposed cone filters. For those that still have the
AFE intake drive around hard for a while. Afterward pop the hood and feel the
cone filters. Are they ambient temperature? Are they warm? Are they hot?

This simple test should tell you something about the temperatures under the hood.
If they are not ambient temperature then you're sucking in warm/hot air.
The hotter they are the worse it is.

Someone try it and report back.
