Actually particle filter does not have anything to do with catalytic converter. Cat is chemical "thing" and particle filter is only filter.

Bended pipes are because of smoking, because that way "smoke" (very small amount) mix better with air. With particle filter there is not "smoke" to try to hide. Also it's difference between EURO3 and EURO4 emissions.

With straight pipes you get more black to tail than with bended, if there is no filter.
