Living in Germany, I get the opportunity to max the car out on a regular basis -- the needle has hit the 250-260 km/h mark plenty of times. (Probably means somewhere around 240-245km/h real speed?)
Cruising at that speed in the 5er for a longer period of time can be misleading though, because the car sits so well on the tarmac that you simply forget how much quicker you're going than other cars until you suddenly shoot past them like they're driving backwards!! I only do these speeds on (almost) empty stretches of autobahn with good visability of what's happening way ahead.
I did 270km/h in an M-Roadster... I couldn't hear a damning thing for a while after that drive!

I went to 255 kph max because it is limited (on the highway of Montana at 6am) . 
the car can go for more.... damn limiter but yes amazing smooth and handling! felt like 120 kph.
