I was in your same boat a week ago... just picked up an 05 545i. I had the info from the dealer, had the carfax and called the dealer who did the work to ask for info on the car. I then had my brother go look at the car... for 3 hours!!! I wanted him to thoroughly look it over without me being there and making an emotional decision. It helped that he lives in Dallas where the car was at, I'm in Indy. I flew down after he gave it a green light, took it to BMW for a pre-buy inspection and made an offer.
I came from a suburban... gas is SUPER cheap compared to what I had so I have no complaints (I was previously getting only 13mpg, got 27.7 on my way home from Dallas - I realize I won't be doing only highway miles forever though). I'm not sure how much more the i6 gets than the v8 but that seems like a small thing to complain about.
Insurance is only $487/6mo in this thing, my 05 Accord is more by a couple hundred dollars!!! It may be time to re-price the Accord.
I'm expecting some items to fail but that's the nature of a used car.
The car is a blast to drive, absolutely love it. Already have some mods lined up for lighting and sub.
Good luck!!

6-If you are an audio guy, make sure all speakers are functional and not damaged. One of my door speakers is giving me distorted sounds because the previous owner listened to heavy metal probably at max volume. I bought a replacement and having it changed by BMW tomorrow.
In all seriousness, my July/2004 545i with 38,xxx miles has been a dream so far. I purchased it last year and have had Zero issues. I made sure to do my homework prior to purchase and made sure to buy it from an old rich guy who used it for his weekend trips to the country club.
In addition, I purchased a 30,000 mile / 30 month warranty for the peace of mind. I would say find a clean one and enjoy it. Don't get scared away if this is the car you want... just take your time and find a gem.
