Are you sure that it is the head gasket? That would be very strange wit 68k miles... Maybe water pump or water hose leak.. Do you have oil in the coolant? Or do you have coolant in the oil?

Regarding the pressure regulating valve. In my case the engine was rough on start. At the end it got really bad.. And finally the emission light came on (Service engine soon + increased emission)
Well im not exactly sure if it is the head gasket but its definetly burning the coolant. Im dropping it off later at the mechanic so he can see what is wrong. Ill check later if there is any oil in the coolant. thanks for the info. I hope its not a cracked head on block but either way the dealer better pay up for it. Does BMW cover engine failure at that milage? or is it up to 50k miles?

That is a lot of brake boosters..... Odd..

I have almost 61K and I put a battery in it last month. Other than tires, brakes, and a couple softrware updates I haven't had any issues.
+1, I currently have 45k.

Battery replaced at 40k, thermostat replaced at around the same time. I'm told one of the valve cover gaskets is weeping oil but not enough to worry about.

Other than that, have had some miscellaneous warranty issues (like a faulty steering shaft and a couple of recalls) but no maintenance-related failures.

I'll probably be doing plugs soon. As far as the pressure regulating valves, can they be purchased aftermarket? Or BMW only? And plugs, what are you guys using and where did you get them? Thanks!

What kind of problems or symptoms did you encounter if any , before replacing the pressure regulating valve?

I have 80K on my 545i, so far I have replace.

brake booster
radiator reservoir and the top hose
i'm thinking about replacing the belt tensioner soon and the pressure regulating valve.
Doing my brakes in a few weeks.
spark plugs replaced in 70k
battery replaced just recently
transmission serviced
Regarding the pressure regulating valve.
As I said before. In my case the engine was rough on start. At the end it got really bad.. And finally the emission light came on (Service engine soon + increased emission)
This is a great DIY regarding the pressure regulating valves (545i has two valves)

Did you check brake booster vacuum hose ?
Item number 5 - it goes from the booster all the way to the vacuum pump. It is made 90% from plastic, but there is a rubber connector just before the vacum pump. It cracks in the buttom

This is in front of the engine. Open the hood on the left side (below radiator reservoir)

At the low speed it was very hard to press the brake pedal. At high speeds or high RPMs no problem... It was loosing the vacuum pressure.

But check the vacuum pipe first.

You can buy the TRW (OEM) brake booster at http://www.partsgeek.com/

It is the same part but no BMW logo ;-)
