2004 525 189,000miles about 185,000 have been 87 octane..
That's enough to convince me to use 87 (if gas mileage doesn't drop).

it completely depends on your timing advance and compression ratio. i dont know about the 550, i would imagine 87 would be okay, but it cant hurt to put premium in, and it doesnt cost that much more.

if you burn through 20 gallons a week, it is only like 100 bucks a year more.

I used BP for a long time but stopped, my SA told me that BP has 10% ethanol, so I now use Citgo (SA recommended). By the way I use 93 octane

I use the least expensive 93 octaine I can find, figuring that the lowest priced gas turns over quickest and is therefore the freshest. At home, it is usually at BJs Wholesale Club or Hess.

550 has compression ratio of 10.5:1. Not that high. The manual says minimum 87 and 91 recommended.
I would rather spend $100 for another 2 tanks of gas...
Of course, if gas mileage drops with 87, that won't make sense.

ah, i drive a 60K car, i am not gonna worry about 100 bucks. for peice of mind, it is worth the $1.50 per tank. 10.5:1 is pretty decent, i would be using the higher octane, i dont know how these cars work, but if your cars timing is electronically advanced and retarded based on the the octane and/or quality of fuel, possibly determined by the O2 sensors, you could defintately see a difference in performance and gas mileage. 4 bucks a month extra on fuel is 1/200 of the cost to operate my car each month. if i really needed the money, i would sacrafice one can of soda each week to run better quality fuel through my car.

whether the argument is for quality or peice of mind, the discussion of whether or not to spend a $1.50 more each month on a 60K car is ludacris.
