93 from Top Tier brands locally. On a round trip to South Bend, IN, almost all the stations along the highways only offered 91. Again, even then I stuck to the Top Tier brands.

i fill up on Shell with their 91 "v power". Works the best for me, and in fact, it solved Rough Idle issue too.
Before i used other gas stations and the car would run rougher. I wouldn't put 89 in it for sure. You bought a BMW but trying to save few cents a gallon sacrifising performance of your car.. i wouldn't do it

My fuel...I have used Chevron 93 since new, and never had a problem...UNTIL I got my DME software updated to the latest version of 33.3.01. It's very possible that the newer software is more 'sensitive' to the Ethanol than the older software...I dunno...I have to run the gas out and get new gas. That's gonna take a while now that I have the Impala... Since then I have had a "misfire/sputter" about once every 1 to 2 minutes when the car sits at idle. Dealer says he found 15% Ethanol in my fuel...and I need to try a tank full of different gas before they will proceed further. Sooooo...I'm in the "new" company Impala, and I go to the same Chevron that I have always for the 535i gas. And I happen to notice that the sign that USED to say "Contains up to 10% Ethanol"...NOW says "Contains Ethanol"....Interesting to say the least!!! NO more Chevron im my BMW........or the 911...it's never had an issue with any gas...but it's a '97, so it's computer is not nearly as sensitive as the '08 535i.

Yes and no, when I had my old Jeep - they recommended only regular. However, I found that (and the dealer also suggested it) I got 2-3 more MPG by using 91 over 87. So I, for one, definitely saw performance gains.

I'm wondering if there isn't some brainwashing going on here about brand name gas and octane. I always wondered why my 5 liter V-8 300+ HP GMC Yukon was OK with 87 octane and yet my almost-Flintstone C 240 with a V-6 168 HP needed 91+. After I researched it a bit, I came to the conclusion that high octane was more an option than a requirement. My 5 seems to work just as well on 89 as 93, but I mix it up as I would with any car.
I think it's a conspiracy between big oil and the car companies, getting us to buy more expensive gas. And as for the second or third tier marketers like Costco, they buy their product from major refiners do they not? They just offer lower costs.
