I've always thought that car manufacturers "recommended" higher octane fuel which was really a bunch of bull s***. I recall the "new lessees" meeting at lexus a few years back where the lexus rep told all the new owners that if we plan on lowering the octane we needed to bring the car by so they could reformat or flush or something like that, but going up in octane was fine with no re-anything.

it has to do with compression and timing. octane has nothing to do with horsepower.

ah, i drive a 60K car, i am not gonna worry about 100 bucks. for peice of mind, it is worth the $1.50 per tank. 10.5:1 is pretty decent, i would be using the higher octane, i dont know how these cars work, but if your cars timing is electronically advanced and retarded based on the the octane and/or quality of fuel, possibly determined by the O2 sensors, you could defintately see a difference in performance and gas mileage. 4 bucks a month extra on fuel is 1/200 of the cost to operate my car each month. if i really needed the money, i would sacrafice one can of soda each week to run better quality fuel through my car.
whether the argument is for quality or peice of mind, the discussion of whether or not to spend a $1.50 more each month on a 60K car is ludacris.

A smooth inline 6 with a 8k RPM redline, a sold platform. Nice and boxy classic BMW looks.
In 20 years, the 335i will be just another 3 series. But the M3 is and will always be an M3.
