Just to clear things up...
DS mode only utilizes 1st thru 5th gear.
Regular D mode only uses 2nd thru 6th gear.
M/S mode is the only way to use all 6 gears.
I AM curious about the difference between the Sport Automatic and the Steptronic Automatic. Other than the Sport button and the shift paddles, is there any other hardware that the Sport has that the Steptronic does not? Because for a $500 upgrade, that is relatively cheap for a factory option, and which leads me to believe both transmissions are the same and have the sport programming built-in. And that the Steptronic just doesn't have the button to access those "magic" pins.

Tactile, responsive are probably not the words that come to mind when you are behind the steering wheel of a big 4 door sendan such as E60. May I present you THE button to change your perception of E60. The button that transforms 5' to a vehicle BMW engineers meant to be. Before bean counters and MBAs got their hands on the blueprints.
It's called FDC (Fahr Dynamic Control). .........

so i guess
DS = Drive Sport
M/S = Manual Shift
I'm not sure on 1st, but I do get 6th in any mode. If i'm going 60mph, and enable SPORT mode, it shifts to 5th. If i'm going 70mph and enable, it stays in 6th. And it shifts by itself to 6th in either shifting mode when SPORT is enabled from a standing start, at around 65mph.
I would say that what i'm calling DS and regular drive - D are the same when SPORT mode is enabled, other than the fact that you're ready to downshift if needed.
I'm switching things around constantly. Low key, nothing on while in the neighborhood to keep the exhaust rumble down at 6:30am. End of neighborhood it's DSC full off, SPORT mode on, then out to the main roads shifting over to the M/S side so i can put it in 6th around 50-55mph if traffic is clear... I definitely have more options now! I'm just worried i'm going to rip the transmission out of the damn thing because I can't keep my foot out of the gas since I did this mod

If im in DS theres no reason to put cruise control on, My foot is all over the pedal, DS is for spirited driving not cruising. Id rather just put in D and get the 6th gear. We were talking about the differences in the DS, sport and D on different variations of the 5 series.
