Hi All:

I talked to the shop foreman who had talked to the engineer. The engineer could add nothing to what the foreman said earlier. So, essentially, what I know is that BMW agrees that 20.01.00 may have made a performance difference, but, if so, does not know what the issue is. My view is that it most likely is Step shifting are incomplete disengagement of DSC/DTC. Of course, a slight detune might be involved. So, my advice is, until things become more clear, not to update to 20+ unless doing so will fix a significant problem or add something significant you are lacking. We all may get updated over time for one reason of another though. I am not going to do any more tests today, but I am going to try to observe as precisely as I can what speed my car begins shifting into both first and second.

I'm in the shop now for the software update, mostly for MP3. Now I am curious to see the difference, if I notice any.

It still is 1/31/06 as above. I went out at 60 degrees and tried some 0 to 60's and one 1/8. My car performed miserably today. Zero to 60's all above 5.52. Here are the results:

0-80 9.07
0-70 7.27
0-60 5.53
0-50 4.10
0-40 2.97.
0-30 1.75
0-20 0.95
0-10 .20
1/8 9.00
1/8 speed 78.10
HP 316@57

Unless things change before the cooler weather ends, I will be cancelling my Dinan CAI install--which already is postponed. And, I will be removing my B&B to see if any improvement occurs. And, why let the B&B affect the way I drive if I am not going for performance and the car doesn't live up to its sound. Here is the first time I have used: .

I am going to have to learn to like crummy MP3's a lot more or to learn to make better ones. Stream gave me some good advice for making MP3's, but it appears to be more trouble, and involves more learning, than I am willing to expend on MP3's. And, another indicated that the encoder used should not be a very big deal. So, here's hoping; I will be seeing if I can get decent quality with iTunes and WMP. Musicmatch certainly was a complete failure at the largest file sizes possible.

I really blew it. My cardinal rule about any kind of software update is don't do it unless it promises to fix a significant, to me, problem or to provide something important, to me, that I don't currently have. I knew that MP3, regardless of the quality, would not be worth giving up the quickness of my car. So, I shouldn't have moved forward on the update. I trusted BMW too much since I had never heard of performance problems from updates. Just 2 1/2 more years to go on my lease, and, at least, I love the car even given its now crummy performance. Maybe the next software update will help.

I will be taking my car in 3 times to complain about the lost performance. I am going to start all the wheels in motion that might be favorable to my outcome. Has anyone ever heard of the lemon law being applied in the case of software updates that take something of significance from a car that isn't remedied in a short period of time with another update?

Hi Friends:

Humor me here for reporting on my Z06. I'm tryinig to drown my sorrows in g-forces. And, there actually is a 20.01.00 reason for this post. Mostly, though, I just want to share my good experience with some kindred ones.

I decided to test my g-meter by taking the Z06 out in 65 degrees. I had no reason to think it has been malfunctioning since, in effect, it would have had to be "working one day and not the next." And, anyway, my 545i definitely feels slower, etc. Still, I wanted to make sure my meter is not giving slow times. It isn't.

I really haven't done much testing with the Z06 because I know essentially what the car is capable of. But, previously, I recorded a 4.03 to 60. I figured I'd get around to trying to break 4 one day. Chevrolet's claim is sub 4.0 sec. times to 60 for the 02 C5 Z06. The magazine bests are:

Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 C&D 12/01 4.00 12.40 116.00
Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 MT 2/02 4.07 12.48 114.90
Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 MT 6/04 4.20 12.40 117.00.

But, some have broken 12 secs. and, thus, certainly, 4.0 with bone stock C5 Z06's even with stock tires. And, the magazines don't use drag radials as I do.

So, I went out today and had a no spin, as it turns out, tune up run of 4.08 to 60. This run was consistent with my prior best of 4.03. So, I concluded immediately that my meter is not yielding slow times. You can quit reading now if you want since this is the part that pertains to 20.01.00.

On my second run, I had much more wheel spin than I intended even though I started at 700 RPM (got a little to much clutch into the action), but I had the presence of mind not to let off because the g-force felt so good. I am glad that I didn't because I ended up with:

0-60 3.77
0-50 3.03
0-40 2.08
0-30 1.45
0-20 .88
0-10 .25
60' 1.88
330' 5.15

Note that I don't power shift; try for no wheel spin; don't rev my engine and drop the clutch; and do simultaneously ease the clutch out and the gas on.

Below are the best documented times for bone stock or CAI equipped C5 Z06's with or without drag radials. And, of course, strip times should be better than street times because of, among other things, the 4k/5k RPM launches. The only comparability I have is with the 60' times. I bolded some the cars that are decent peers for my car (i.e., those with an intake mod or drag radials (DRs), but not both) Note that either a CAI or the Zip Tie mod adds significantly to the HP of a C5 Z06.

As expected, most of the bolded cars beat my 60' time, but, on the other hand, I started my run on street asphalt at 700 RMP, having had no burn out, and don't power shift (as most of the good strip drivers do) (see description of how I get my times above). Also, my good run was an accident since my intention is to get the best zero to 60 time possible with essentially zero wheel spin.

I feel for you Znod.It looked loke things were improving ,but todays results are disheartening.I am still in limbo with my problem. The warehouse sent the incorrect headlight so I must wait until tomorrow for the repair. They are still saying if the headlight doesn't correct the problem they must do the software update.I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.If I wind up with 20.01 and lose performance maybe we can present a united front and come at BMW from 2 locations.Maybe they will start listening.

If you post a serious car technical related topic or question you hardly get 10 replies. But below you find a post about who raced what and you get 20 pages of replies. No problem with that but I really thing that is more of a chat think which should go to the Lounge section.

You are a tad confused Stream. Did you read my the whole post above? I recongnized that it is a bit out of line, but even it had a 20.01.00 rationale especially before I got the result I did. And, I assume that you have seen the encouragement to keep people updated on my car and what I learn about 20.01.00, etc., on this thread. Have you read the whole thread?

And, with respect to this whole thread, are you claming that it is not pertinent to the 5 series. Regardless, I post on many of the discussions and generally in the right discussions. I am not saying that I have never made a mistake on which discussion I post in or that I have never taken minor liberties, but I am very conscientious about where I post. Also, I can't agree with your suggested implications of the link you posted, although some may agree that this post should be in the lounge.

I suggest that if you have things of a critical nature to say to me that you PM me. I don't appreciate your public comments and gross exaggerations. And, I don't think that you are in charge of what people post and where. If you think that my threads and posts are too far a field, then I suggest that you report them, give your rationale, and suggest that they be removed or censored.

I note that you criticized me once before about my MP3 thread. Perhaps, it should have been in the lounge, but my judgment is that it is a 5er-specific-enough topic to be here--as many of us are interested in the 5er and MP3 issues. In this regard, I will rely on my judgment of what to post and where--not on your's. Also, you criticized me about making the second post on a thread and unthinkingly quoting the poster. Enough is enough.

Also, if you are not singling me out for criticism, then you will be kept very busy telling everyone when they have posted incorrectly in the various forums. Here's a great opportunity for you. You can point out that Bokke and I are disussing g-meters inappropriately in this forum.
