The dealer was finally able to enable the mp3 capability on my car last month.

I noticed that the display concatinates the file names in the normal case. However, if you go to the 'DETAILS' mp3 play mode, the Artist Name and the complete Song Name (different from the file name) are also displayed. 'Wonder where these details come from....I guess it is standard mp3 protocol to burn in the Artist and Song information. Pretty neat.

I may be wrong, but all the info shows up when I throw them in my computer regardless of whether I'm connected to the internet or not. And by connected I mean having either an ethernet or wireless connection, not just turning on explorer, or aol, or whetever.
That's strange - if it does obtain track data it's probably not able to get it from the disc itself. This is because the CD standards don't extend to artist and track info other than CD text. I think your one one disc that showed the artist and track data on the CD screen in iDrive was the only one that had proper CD text encoding. I'm amazed how rare it is, hardly any of the discs I get (and I get new discs most weeks) have CD text. Here's a link which discusses CDDB, the data limitaions around red book standard CD audio and the reasons why something like CDDB is needed.

I just purchased a new CD by the group Zero 7 and the song titles appeared on the screen when I put it in the CD player. This has never happened with any other CDs I have played in my car. Does anyone know whether this is a new technology that will be found on new disks or a one-off situation?

Thanks.

MR
I always recompile my CDs so i can get song titles. I wish the changer would give them too.
