Just found out on my last service visit at approx. 64,000 miles (for Active Steering failure, Radio RDS malfunction, Passenger Airbag malfunction) that my "Factory BMW extended warranty" does not cover any software upgrades. My dealer (Bob Smith Calabassas,CA) will cover the airbag since they need to replace a mat in the passenger seat and then update the software for the airbag only. However they are telling me for the Active Steering and Radio RDS function, since there is no actual part being replaced and it only needs a software upgrade to fix it, that it is NOT covered. Has any one else heard of this? What good is the extended warranty? According to them, when the software is updated, it is updated for only specific parts of the car. I don't understand? The service manager explained to me that the extended warranty only covers mechanical parts of the car. What a bunch of BS! Isn't my active steering a mechanical part of my car? Help anyone?

I wish I could help but I'm not sure I can do much more than agree with you completely. Is this a BMW extended warranty or through a third-party?

I have to believe that if BMW isn't currently including software updates in their extended warranties, they'll have to in the future for specific faults that are corrected in newer CIP versions.

Again, if the warranty is a BMW warranty, I'd call BMWNA and ask them why it wouldn't be covered...

Good luck!

This is the original BMW Owner Protection Program I purchased through the dealership. I also purchased the full service maintenance program through 100K miles. Can't wait to see what they exclude there...

I feel sorry for you. I am having my CIP upgrade next week for mp3, my service advisor told me it will take 1.5 days for the upgrade, because there is NO partial upgrade, it needs to be full reinstall with newer version.

Ps. Your e60 has the highest mileage I seen in any post here.
