Smooth Stops... Is it possible?

i hear you on that. my dealer said they would take a look, then they came back and told me it was operating normally. I will bet anyone at that delaer $500 that they can not stop the car smoothly. They didnt even bother doing the software

I think it boils down to two issues:

1. At idle, the car produces too much forward thrust - I say this because even from a stand still, putting the car in D causes a bit of a lurch forward. I idle at about 700 RPM with the A/C on. Its still too hot here to run without it. That said, when stopping you're also fighting the car's desire to keep moving.

2. The brakes are *very* grippy - tried stopping smoothly even in N, it still happens. The car comes to a speed at which the grippiness of the brakes overcomes to momentum of the car, and they lock.

Number 1 above is annoying even when starting out. For example, when leaving my garage the car feels like it wants to leap out of the garage the second I put it in D. It surges against the brakes, and they groan at the load. Interestingly, I seem to remember a similar A/C related issue with my E30 many years ago (high idle, lurchy behaviour).

Number 2 I'm not sure about. Sure, they're big brakes, but you should still be able to modulate them a lot easier than you can. It almost feels like the brakes are over boosted. I wonder if DSC is playing a role in this? I'll have to test this out.

Now it has been 3 days, and the dealer STILL has my car for this braking issue, though they swear the software update will solve the problem. We'll see!

my car (08 550i with SAT) was at dealer shop two weeks ago because i complained about jerk stops. It happens at about 5 mph downshifts. It is a DAMN Pain in the s, dealer told me that i don't have enough miles (at time of service, car had aboput 700 miles) on car to "properly say what is the problem". BS flag going up here. They sent me home and told me to watch it and report back when i have at least 1200-1500 miles. this has happened since the car had 5 miles and still happens now with 900 miles. Just gonna have to keep trying...If anyone figures a solution, please post. thanks

Tried turning DTS off completely (hold the button in for about 10 seconds until iDrive states it is completely disabled). No apparent difference. I'll try playing with it some more in the following days. I'm going on a road trip so it should be a good opportunity to test it out.

its really a embarassing fault on BMW's part. A 10k kia, 15k gm, 20k honda, 30k audi, 40k mb can all stop like a normal car should...but our E60 cant stop properly? Anyone have success with the software update?

If you are referring to CIP, mine was upgraded to the latest not more than 3 weeks ago. Didn't help.

yes the CIP, i was hoping that this was the same as the "2-1 TIP" procedure that another memeber said was successful on their car. my dealer was clueless when I mentioned this 2-1 procedure

I too think this is down to the brakes being very "grippy". We have a new 535d Sep07. Whilst we have no transmission slams, it was quite surprising how much bite the brakes have, almost like they are over assisted. There is also next to no movement in the pedal in terms of being able to progressively apply the brakes. Im sure for those with some transmission down shift issues the problem will be exagerated.

For me, it was just a case of adjusting to it, to be honest I find I really have to feather the pedal just as the car comes to a stop to prevent it which hasn't been too much trouble to get used to. However my wife (god bless her driving skills ) still hasn't mastered this and is getting quite frustrated with it.

As others have said, you don't expect this on a car of this caliber, I don't really have a problem with it but I can understand why some do.

putting a bubble in the brake line wold solve it, but im sure most wouldnt feel good about that. maybe its the brake assist contributing to the problem
