Hello everyone,

We have a 2004 530i M54 engine and I've noticed for the longest time that when we start the car in the morning it takes a little longer to crank. The engine continues to crank until I release the brake. Then the exhaust spurts out black smoke. If I try to drive the car during this time, the steering wheel is really stiff until I give the gas, then it's all good. I've noticed that after the car idles for a little while (1-2 minutes) the car also drives well.

We took it to get read and one of the codes what a Crankshaft Position Sensor fault. Looking online, I could only find aftermarket parts - which might not always solve the problem. I've read elsewhere that I need to buy an OEM part.

Here in Toronto, the part costs $300 and I've seen aftermarket parts anywhere from $50-$100.

Does anyone know of an OEM brand that is cheaper than the dealer?

Thanks!
