IMO if you can't afford a oil change at 5,000- 7.500 or whatever you shouldn't own a BMW. MO
cheers

The maintenance changes your oil every 15k miles. Would it be overkill to change it yourself at 7k miles and than have dealer change it at 15k??
You could replace your tires with new ones at the same time.

If you choose to have it changed, can you just use regular oil or does it have to be synthetic?

If you change have it changed, do you have to re-set anything so that you can still get your free 15K service?

I'm going to assume you meant, "If you have it changed before the service interval...."
Make sure that you don't reset the service counter in iDrive, that way you will still get your free oil change at the recommended maintenance interval.

Plain and simple...
If it's synthetic (Mobile-1, etc) , the 15K interval is fine (really you can go more);
It it's normal oil, change it twice as often at a minimum - hence 7.5K miles.

Synthetic oil's detergent and lubricating properties hold up great under extreme stresses. Easily twice as good as regular oil. That's why the premium and performance vehicles use them. It's worth the extra cost. Not only does it pay through added protection, it also pays by not having to change it as often.

My 2004 530i is getting changed as recommended by BMW which is approximately every 15000 miles. Of course this interval is based on my driving style which is assessed by the car's computer. I plan on keeping the vehicle until it dies, and have about 51000 miles clocked. I'll be sure to let everyone know how long it lasts.

To answer your question. No. I dont think its a good idea to use regular oil... for that matter... You should NOT use regular oil. Just put synthetic in it... its not THAT much more money.

And DONT reset anything. once you reset it the dealer will not change your oil for you when you reach 12-15K miles... leave the count down as in and just change the oil and filter.

If you feel like it change it. Is it necessary to change it in between recommeded intervals? No. But if it makes you feel better go for it. I know I do it. I like having clean oil in my engine when I decide to go WOT. I dont want old dirty oil when I push my car hard. I'm sure its "OK" but I like the oil to be at its best and keep my engine lubed when i push the car.
