The maintenance changes your oil every 15k miles. Would it be overkill to change it yourself at 7k miles and than have dealer change it at 15k??

you're right. this thread is funny. very funny.
Your engine is more quiet now because it has 6.5l of oil not 2.5. Also, trust me there is no oil on planet earth that will make your engine more powerful.
Sorry to the rest of the guys in this forum, but although I had promised to myself not to respond to this tread again, I couldn't resist.
LoL...

I've already had 2 oil change, the first one by BMW after one year of ownership. When I went in for the fill up at the 8 months time, the iDrive prompted the oil low warning therefore I went in for the fillup, it was then they put 4 liters in, otherwise the car should be fine. Just to let you know that despite losing some oil (don't know where to) the engine is still quiet, that's BMW's engine quality
Then I went for an oil change at one year's time when BMW finally gave me that free oil change. After the first oil change I changed the OEM filter to a K&N which gives the engine a sportier tone as other HK members can confirm this, don't really know what's the reason for the change in engine tone, then I drove the car for 9000 more km before I go for a second oil change, at that time the iDrive shows half oil or half of the recommended saftety level or whatever you like to call it.
I would say an oil change in 6 months time or usually around 10000km for me if you don't drive too much as oil sitting too long is no good. Some other member here in HK I know change their oil at 6000km that's like 4000 miles? I wouldn't think is an overkill. Different folks, different stroke.
Going off topic now Mike
It was after the second oil change the engine is quieter, but power wise there's no difference as you would've expect an engine with new oil. If you can't spot that difference in engine performance, maybe you are not driving hard enough and should switch to a MB
You don't need to tell me how many BMW you have previously driven or how many race car you've driven (if you have racing experience) I don't really care. This forum is a place for information and knowing your car (E60 in particular) better, not bluffing or telling people what you have and own.
You are right, I am sorry for other forum member because they have to read your bull and can't sleep tonite :'( (I know I wouldn't but anyways..) for knowing the fact that you break a promise you make to yourself I guess daddy is not giving you a candy tonight huh..
Cheers.

That's really strange, but way cheaper than a new exhaust system

Not overkill at all. I change mine every 5k miles and every 3k miles in my Volvo using Mobil 1.
