Yes, sounds that simple, but, once you experience the HSW, you'll never think this way again, trust me. Although I still enjoy driving my E46, I shudder at the thought of not having the HSW in the E46, when it's my turn to drive it, and yes, I have a terrific pair of leather gloves but they just don't compare.
On these bitterly cold mornings I'd LOVE to have one

Here are some pics of my right hand drive BMW. Note I made an error in my previous assumption, it's actually the handbrake down that allows this arm rest to lock into place. When you lift the handbrake up it disengages the lock and the arm rest retracts in.

Wow, I didn't even know my arm rest could do that until I read this thread! But, how exactly did you get it to retract automatically?

Probably not on all models but the little pull out and retractable arm rest that is located above the handbrake. (this extension over your handbrake allows you to rest your arm more forward...closer to the gear shift).

Anyway, while in Drive or Sport, you can pull it out and it will lock in place. When you shift to back to park, or turn off ignition and leave the the arm rest will auto unlock and retract back into place!

Try it!...for some reason it doesn't allow it to lock into place unless your in "Drive" or "S", it just keeps retracting.
Mine will pull out and lock whether or not the car is in D or S mode and it doesn't retract when put in Park?

Also, the manual doesn't mention anything about that piece of the armrest being able to do that?

I guess I am sick as well Rudy

To prevent me jumping out, I almost never let anyone else aside from me load anything in my trunk, just to make sure they don't drag it across my bumper...

HAHAHAHA

+1 and +1

So true.

The armrest retracts when you pull up the handbrake.

But not by design, just by brute force...

Great thread, I like the tip where you only have to move in the direction of the navigation, communication or entertainment and your at that screen without having to first go to the standard home menu screen first!!! Thanks this saved a couple of extra steps.

Actually mine as soon as you even start pulling up on the parking brake the handrest releases and retracts a few inches, so it definitely is not by brute force.
