Like many others here, - I was concerned about the initial rumours about the NCAP scores.
Now I'm not too concerned about the pedestrian scores that seem to have dragged the overall score down - BUT.. what has happened here?

OK - it gets 4 stars ... But reading the NCAP site it says "allowed frontal, side and pole retests following improvements to the car?s steering column, footrest, door trim, door latch, airbags and software.

My question is; When did these modifications take place?
Atre they embodied in our cars?

Nobody who knows the answer wants to give us the answer!
That means, we all are driving in cars with a severe problem!
IMHO

I can give you the answer. If your VIN/FGSTNR is WBANA72080 B790822 or higher you have the modifications. If lower you have not. I think that is production date middle of november 2004 or later.

Francois,

If you know the production date the changes were made, do you know what the mods are?

If this is true I will return my car to the dealership next week. I didn't pay 80.000 euros for a car that isn't able to get a 5 star NCAP result.

I'll call my dealer on monday and see if they can answer this question for me (I bet not).

BMW will not be able to keep this secret for too long. Once the US lawyers get a hold of this info they will cross reference with vehicular accident data for model year 2004 E60 and contact individuals/families who suffered losses. To allow E60 owners to drive a vehicle with a substandard saftey history without notification or remedy is irresponsible. I smell recall in the air.

Nope.. that VIN number goes against the traditional BMW VIN sequence... well the important part of the VIN isnt traditional...

Digit 8: which tells us the restraint system is a 0 it should be 1 to 5... I have a 5 in mine...

Digit 10: Tells us what year the car is... it has a 0 I have a 5 telling me its a 2005

Last 6 Digits: Is sequential but Its waaaaaaaaaaaay off from my VIN and my cars a Nov 11 2004 Build...

Can anyone else check their VIN to varify how accurate this decoding system is?

My vin is B610901 and its build august 11th 2004. So that would mean that there are 179921 cars build after mine since the modifications in about 3 months. If your correct that would be a lot of E60's in such a short time.

But it clearly states that the modifications have be there since:

VIN and date when rating applies WBANA72080 B790822
