could it be a sensor and tranny problem?

Someone said it could be the 'throttle sensor body'. Was that the sensor you were referring to?

Bob

I've not tried to start it. Thought it wise to ring BMW on Monday first. Will keep you posted

Cheers mate
sounds like it could be crankcase compression, i know a courtesy car i had (VW Golf GT TDI 170) did it.
i was driving along and it just floored its self, luckily i knew what to do as id heard about this sort of thing before, and i just put it in the highest gear and slammed the brake on and stalled it - and avoided a hefty bill.

Golf GT TDI 170 I had one as a courtesy hire car, awesome performance..... Still prefer my 525d though.

Any update on the revving 05 E60?

Ceeray

Wel clearly I'm wrong. My car just had an MOT not long ago and the mechanic said the car did not have a turbo, when he did the emissions test. Prior to that I assumed it had a turbo purely because of the power the engine had. I'll ring BMW tomorrow and clarify...Cheers Ceery
What kind of half-assed mechanic did you take the car to?
99,9% of all diesels produced in the last 10 years are turbo's. Without a turbo, diesels really lack power.

A mechanic that MOT's a "new" BMW like this should know it's a turbo.
Did he even know it was a diesel?

The car was started yesterday. It took a few turns but soon started. Once started the engine sounded unsmooth. I revved it gently and it seemed underpowered and thought maybe the turbo's blown. I revved it more and the car once again revved out of control, max revs, smoke - stalled the car in 6th.

I feel there is an accelerator sensor -or electronic problem. BMW said the same. However, I also feel damage has been done re the over revving. My brother who is a retired mechanic is going to look for obvious things around the accelerator area - then it will need a diagnostic at BMW.

Will keep you updated and thanks for the concern

The rev limiter in theory should prevent ANY over revving of the engine.......not that its of course good to bounce the limiter
