I was driving along when my e60 520d started to rev up and out of control with no response from my accelerator pedal. I pulled over but could not turn the car off. My car was revving at max power and screaming on it's own in neutral. Then, the revs went right down and then back up to max twice. I put the key back in then the car engine finally stopped.

By this time there was white smoke everywhere because of the revving and a fire engine arrived because some kind citizen had most probably thought the car was gonna blow up. The recovery guy said it might be the sensor that deals with acceleration? Anyway I'm just hoping the engine hasn't blown as a consequence of all that revving.

Has anyone had any problems like this?

Hi mate
Yes basically it wouldn't stop revving at max power then 20 seconds later the revs went right down then back up. I couldn't stop the engine, even took the key out. The car is diesel so couldn't pull plug leads out to stop the engine.

When I pulled the car over and tried to stop it and it wouldn't. I got out to open the bonnet and there was so much smoke I couldn't even see the bonnet. Mate I nearly shit my pants. I didn't know what to do. I then tried putting the key back in to try and stop it and thankfully it stopped.

I didn't get what you meant by tranny...you obviously mean transmission but I can't see it being that

Cheers

That's scary. Never heard of this before.

The E60 has a electronic throttle...

To the service at once!

could be seals in turbo if they go the oil gets into the intake side then goes into engine and combusts like deisel
the revs go right up usually until the engine runs out of oil unless you can stop it usually by stalling it i saw a clip on u tube
of a X5 3 litre deisel doing this exactly same symptoms as yours engine revs to max and piles of white smoke
the owners desperate to try and switch it off
hope it is not this in your case because there could be engine damage

Just wondering if you disconnect the battery neg terminal would that cut things out? Also I recall this happened to a french drive in a renault, he called the cops saying his car had taken control of the accelerator on the motorway. We was doing about 120mph and totally shitting himself, I think i read it on theregister (not sure of the outcome). You were lucky this never happened, especially on a british nose to tail motorway.
