You were right the seals in the turbo have gone and the oil caused all the white smoke.

I have been told by an old family friend, who has been a bimmer main agent mechanic for 30 year and still is. He said I might be lucky and have no engine damage...but wear and tear obviously. He said he fixed an e60 last week with the exact same problem, so therefore this make diagnosing my problem easy.

My car was car started. It was very underpowered. Once revved it started screaming at max revs with white smoke....then it has to be stalled.

He said I will need a new turbo and cat. As to the damage. This will only be known once the turbo and cat has been fitted and the car is used under driving load.

I'm gonna have nightmares about this now, that is horrendous. Anyone know what you can do if this happens? I dread to think of this happening in an auto in drive, its an auto that I have which is quick at the best of times. Surely BMW should be doing a recall to check the condition of the turbos on all of their diesel cars, in fact is this stemming from a blocked breather a ?20 part that they should be adding to their oil service routine.

I might write to them to ask why they are not replacing these breather filters in the service schedule, while i am at it will also be asking them why the inlet flaps are not inspected for signs of wear every 50,000 miles.

Thats exactly like what happened to me except, or it seemed. My e60 ran at a lot faster rpm (the engine was screaming) and my smoke was coming from the engine compartment as well, even the inside of the car filled with smoke. I think the seal broke in an area that didn't send the smoke down the exhaust which may have let it rev faster.

I imagine the only course of action in an auto is to slip it in to neutral, and stop as soon as possible. I believe there are specialist firms around who will refurbish turbos, and I wonder if it would be a wise move to go down this road after 70K or 80K mls? I think a new turbo is around ?1K, and IIRC, a refurb one is something like ?400. Hopefully Indyjatboy hasn't got too much damage, but unfortunately, in worst case situations, a repair bill for a new engine, turbo, etc., could amount to about ?12K - without even thinking of the safety aspect involved!
