could be seals in turbo if they go the oil gets into the intake side then goes into engine and combusts like deisel
the revs go right up usually until the engine runs out of oil unless you can stop it usually by stalling it i saw a clip on u tube
of a X5 3 litre deisel doing this exactly same symptoms as yours engine revs to max and piles of white smoke
the owners desperate to try and switch it off
hope it is not this in your case because there could be engine damage

There is a turbo on the 520D, if there wasnt you wouldnt get any decent performance.
See link to realoem:- http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?mode...hg=11&fg=50
Hows the car? I was thinking about this, your engine is probably ok I think you caught it in time. Obviously the source of the leak will need to be identified, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

E60/61 520D HAS turbo. How in the h*ll you think you could even think about achieving 177hp without one?
AFAIK BMW has not been making diesels without turbo for ages (if not ever..)
Check out bmwland.co.uk forums, there are similar failures and one instance is that your high pressure rail pump has failed-->pushed diesel into the engine causing it to fill, then via breather to turbo and there you go...
BUT if you still want to stick to the "520d has no turbo"-story, its fine by me but its the same as sticking your fingers into your ears and yelling I cant hear ya..
Don?t ask for help if you are not willing to listen to it..

Surely this has to become a recall issue to retrofit a part that will prevent this, its a matter of time before someone ends up killed because their car decides to go for its top speed on a busy motorway.

Wel clearly I'm wrong. My car just had an MOT not long ago and the mechanic said the car did not have a turbo, when he did the emissions test. Prior to that I assumed it had a turbo purely because of the power the engine had. I'll ring BMW tomorrow and clarify...Cheers Ceery

Just similar failure as you did have.
I sure hope you got warranty left, if you do then its no brainer who is going to pay the bill.
