hey3688 is right! Your car?s turbo has eaten all your oil and there would have been only one option to shut it down, by stalling. No other means are available (of course stopping airflow but hey..) and it will run without electricy and other control. Think about ram air jet engine, highly pressurised air and fuel which ignites, causing more pressure->turbo runs faster->go on until it grinds to stop or fuel(your engine oil) has been exhausted.
Your engine is pretty much toast I think, think about overrevving engine without oil. Sorry.
How old your car is and do you have a warranty? If not then contact BMW anyways and try to get a goodwill solution...

Its clearly a case of a defect Turbo , as earlyer mentioned ( motor oil going into the Turbo ) , get it fixed before driving the car again , next time you perhaps wouldent be so locky , and the hole engine will get damaged , "blow up" .

Regarding the cause, could it be caused by pressure build up due to a blocked breather or oil return pipe? If so then surely this is a design fault, or at the very least something that should be added to the service schedule like replacing the breather or pipe. Its typical of BMW for preventative maintenance to be left to the owner to research and address at their own cost.

could be seals in turbo if they go the oil gets into the intake side then goes into engine and combusts like deisel
the revs go right up usually until the engine runs out of oil unless you can stop it usually by stalling it i saw a clip on u tube
of a X5 3 litre deisel doing this exactly same symptoms as yours engine revs to max and piles of white smoke
the owners desperate to try and switch it off
hope it is not this in your case because there could be engine damage

1989 E30 318 SE - No problems.
1989 E34 525 SE - No problems.
1989 E30 325 SE - Oil leak at filter housing.
1994 E36 318 SE - No problems.
1993 E36 320 SE Coupe - Replaced ignition coils.
1994 E38 740 SE - Tons of bushes replaced ???'s, replaced radiator (broken neck), valve cover gasket, retightened oil pump bolts (one was out totally), fuel pump replaced.
1994 E36 325 SE - Replaced battery, replaced thermostat, cleaned idle control valve, replaced O2 sensor, replaced rear shocks.
2001 E46 330 Sport - Rear control arm replaced.
2000 Z3 2.0 SE - Replaced water pump (no reason just piece of mind).
To be fair i have owned tons of other makes but I alway go back to BMW, BMW engines are the best in the world hence they keep winning awards and you are never short of finding DIY write ups by enthusiasts.
