It's a brand new 330d M Sport; a really nice piece of kit. I don't know why the guy has done this to his car. He also has an "M" badge on the front grille
He has also deleted the 'd'. Very strange man...

That definetly is not the case here and the bigger the engine the better people believe in the USA ( I am american and believe the same thing).
I see this mentality changing, slowly but changing in the US. I was just debating during coffee break chat, the miles per gallon (MPG) my wife's SUV has vs. other co-workers' minivans/SUVs. MPG is becoming a big concern and apparently the more the better and cooler you are.

Why on earth would you ever do something like that??? That M badge on the left side looks so bad.

The question is: why do Europeans do it?
Simple answer.

Because in Europe it costs so much more to purchase anything, that the average BMW buyer can't afford anything but a base model. So people debadge their BMWs because they are most likely driving 525's but they want people to think they have a 545.

Mine is debadged and came that way. It just adds to the fun. Sales reps in 1.9TDi Passats and Ford Mondeo TDCi's are always sure that if it's debadged then it must be a 520d. Iif you waste them they will be left quizzing what hit them, especially since you can't tell from the exhaust tips.

If I had an M5 I would definitely have a 520d tail sticker on the back just for the fun of it.

Debadging is a personal perference, if its a base model debadging gives the car more appeal, than drawing attention on its modest engine.

If its a high end model, debadging will lessen its attention-getting status, its more like being humble.
For example, i know people who debage their 540 (e39) /545 and M5 cause they don't want to cause unwanted attention, at work with their regular workers / employees or with his boss (who drives an old mercedes). One guy debadge out of necessity cause he frequents construction sites in less than stellar neighbourhoods.

An acquaintance debedged his car, cause he does not want dad to know where part of his 'investment' went. Old school dads believe, not to be too proud and spend excessively. He kept telling everyone his car is pre-owned and a steal from someone's divorce settlement, but didn't fool me, hahaha!

People who don't know cars associate high numbers with big bucks, wouldn't know to look for signs like exhaust tips , low profile 18" wheels or side grills etc.

I wouldn't mind debadging a higher end model, but will likely keep it on if its a lower end model, we don't see people debadging the BMW roundel do we?

However spotting a wrong badge is a terrible crime!

In normal conversation:

What car do you drive?
A BMW.
Nice or Great or What colour or OK, see you.

Seldom we hear,
what model?
or
what engine?
or
New or used?
