i have attached the following pic.
The box selected in the pic, what is it for? is it for adjusting the temperature? if so, why dont you just use the circular knobs? i think its too much of a hassle to go in idrive just to change temperature if thats what it is for.
the box on the left side of the selected box. whats that for? is it to adjust the speed?

Right, I'm going to try and answer this even without the piccy
as I think I know what you mean.
First a bit of history: Older beemers had a wheel on the central dash vents that allowed you to change the air temp out of just that vent, regardless of what your climate control was set to.
The box you're talking about is just the modern implementation of that - leave it on the middle (white) setting and you'll get the same air temp as is going to all the other vents.
Secondly, the other boxes control the air distribution rather than the flow. Top one for the windscreen, middle one - dash vents, bottom one - footwell.
My advice: Leave it all on Auto, don't worry about the i-drive settings. Just dial in the temp you want and away you go.
The E60 climate control is the best I've ever seen by miles
EDIT: Now I see the Pic!

The best way I can describe it is with a couple of examples. (You can actually see the effect of these if you have that screen in the pic showing when you do them, by the way)
1. If you press the rapid demist button the air distribution moves solely to windscreen. None comes out of the central vents or footwell. (The air flow also increases, of course)
2. If you press the MAX cool button, the air distrbution moves solely to the dash mounted vents (along with turning on the air re-circ, and maxing out the fan speed).
In normal operation when you have it all set to auto, the car dynamically adjusts the air distribution for you.
Try it and see.
EDIT: Aha, I appear to have spammed myself to 500 posts
