All I can remember of the day is that everyone was complaining that the strip was having a slippery day - it opened very late (we were sat at the front of the queue - 535d, 745iL and 530d) for over an hour waiting for them to get going. The weather was overcast.

Hi all.I have been catching up on this thread the past several days and find it interesting.
First let me say that diesels have made tremendous advances in the last several years in producing excellent performance,quiet operation and super mileage.However I still prefer the gasoline engine.The diesel of similar horsepower as the gasoline engine will always be handicaped due to the limited rpm range.The torque is tremendous but you need to have a wide rpm range for the best straight line performance.
I believe "clived"is the resident expert in this forum on the performance of the 535d.I have read his posts last year on his exploits at the drag strip,before & after his car was remapped.He has had excellent results in the 1/4 mile,I think 13.8 at about 100 mph.I have not heard of better results for a 535d.However if you have followed the threads mentioned by Znod you will note that both he and I have achieved times of 13.30's to 13.40's at over 105 mph.I believe Znod has described his car,my car is a completly unmodified 545 steptronic with standard goodyear RSA tires,no sport package,20000 miles on the odometer with original air filter and spark plugs with 20.01 software.My best runs were made with DTC/DSC engaged and in D.I know .5 seconds doesn't sound like much,but in terms of a 1/4 mile race it means about 5 car lengths at the finish line.This is a large margin in a relatively short race.The diesel would do better from a moving start(40-70)
but the 545 using its best gears(2 to 3)is still faster than the 535d.It would be unfair to use the same conditions for the 545 and the 535d because of the drastically different HP & torque curves.Each car should use its gears to its best advantage.

I read through a few of the first few pages and there was so much bickering going on that I really just couldn't understand. I mean, I have a 535d, but I didn't choose it over a 545i. I chose it over the 530i that was priced much more similar. The fact that the the 535d can even be compared to the 545i that costs $10K more is an amazing achievement and only solidifies my choice. Were talking a fraction of a difference in times here that in the real world would probably be less. I wouldn't have a problem taking on a 545i since I would have nothing to lose. I would be expected to lose, hoever, what would happen if I didn't?
