Znod - I think you need to drop the modcar figures. Unfortunately, it seems they are theoretical not measured.

The data comes from here:

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/default.asp

It's calculated based on weight, power and drivetrain - interesting, but not accurate enough.
I searched on ModCar and did not find an indication that its times are calculated. Please direct me to the info that says that they are calculated. And, yes, assuming you are right, I will omit the ModCar data.

This site might be interesting:

www.fastsaloons.com

They have the 0-100 for the 535d as 15secs, the mean of this and the 3 german mag figures is 15.45secs.

Quarter mile is given as 14.5 secs.
Right, I found those times. How do they get their times? I could not figure it out definitively.

They don't quote a source but it seems pretty detailed stuff. There are contact emails there for the editors etc so you could ask directly?

Check out the compare and race bit - s'good fun - 545i beats 535d !

and just to wind up 700700 and bettermakeway try racing the 745li against the 535d (535d wins by 0.3 secs )

At the bottom of this page:

http://www.modcar.org/pages/BMW

It says this:

Please note these are thoery figures only and may differ from manufactures quoted statistics. Copyright http://www.letstorquebhp.com

Oh, my bad. Maybe I should have read the bottom of the page. I'll the races later--doing too many other things right now. Below is where we are. Check out my "natural bias" footnote. I had not bothered to mention this detail before.

Here is everything I know at this point about 0 to 100 MPH and 1/4 times and speeds for the two cars.

All Steptronics:

{...............................................54 5i*......................................}{....... ........535d*...........................}
..............MT........RT............MT......GM.. ...grogan545#....Znod#..{................GM's..... ..........Clived^..}
...........Aug-04...Jun-05...Oct-05
0-X.......13.70...13.70......13.80.................. 13.434.......13.467............................... ............14.174
0-100*.13.60...12.70....13.60....14.9............... ............12.004.........15.1.....16.4.....15.3

X = 102.1, 104, and 102.8, 104.8, 104.9, and 98.06 respectively.
GM = German Magazine.

*Please keep the natural bias in favor of the 535d in the above values in mind. The US mag times are for 0 - 100 MPH. The German mag times are for 0 - 99.42 MPH. In this regard, it takes my car more than .1 second to move from 99.42 MPH to 100 MPH. Thus, each of the 535d times should be increased by more than .1 second--perhaps as much as .15 second.

^Clived's results were obtained at Santa Pod Raceway in the UK (Wellingborough, Northhamptonshire) (see above for his complete results). Making an educated quess, using web data, I think that Santa Pod is likely to be about 250' above sea level. If so, then Clived's 1/4 time and speed adjusted to 500' (see below) become 14.212 and 97.798, respectively.

#grogan545's (average of best 3) and Znod's (average of best 5) results were produced using g-meters. They are adjusted for weather and altitude to 500'. grogan545i's unadjusted values, from 400', are 13.382 and 105.229. Znod's unadjusted values, from 1600', are 13.634 and 103.378.

needforspeed found 1/4 in 14.5 and 0 to 100 in 15 for the 535d at FastSaloon.com. If we can determine that they result from tests that appear to be unbiased, then I will include them above.

I am using "apparently" to indicate all I have is hearsay from others. I don't think that I have ever seen you make the claim, but maybe I missed it. I would appreciate answers to my questions. Perhaps others would too. And, I don't make the sort of insinuations that you may be inferring that I do.
Ok, that's cool - I'm sure you can see where I was coming from :-)

Yes, I did a 13.8(0something) in my DMS'd 535d. I'm sure that in the right conditions / with a little more practice a high 13.7 would have been possible - maybe just by losing the extra half a tank of fuel I didn't need and finding the exact rev point to be holding at to avoid any wheel spin - but I only had time for 3 runs that day, so didn't do it, so I'll still with 13.8 :-) I do have the slip here sometime - good excuse to tidy the study this weekend maybe!

So that means 14.1 must have been the time before the remap!? Right?

Yes, I understand. Thanks much. And, what about the 14.1 or so time I mentioned? Was it before or after DMS? And, 13.8 is an excellent time. Way to go.

As said originally, great time. I am going to add it above as a 535d data point. Thanks much. For fairness, I am going to add the average of my 5 bests and the average of grogan545's 3 bests. Oh, and do you know the altitude of Santa Pod? Also, do you recall anything about the weather condtions present during your 14.1 pass?

All I can remember of the day is that everyone was complaining that the strip was having a slippery day - it opened very late (we were sat at the front of the queue - 535d, 745iL and 530d) for over an hour waiting for them to get going. The weather was overcast.
