How did this thread get so long?
Someone summarize it for me?
So how much faster is the 545i comapred to the 535d?

We also know that this engine could take easily 350+bhp and more than 660NM but we decided for the "safe reasons" to leave it at only 272. It seems that we should have lowered it even more.

Has anyone read the data I have posted except Ipp and 700700? How can anyone look at these data and think that the 535d is even almost as fast as the 545i in straight-line performance? Yes, we have a couple of magazine-report ambiguities. But, goodness, look at the preponderance of the evidence.

The figures from the magazine you showed have got to be the worst set of figures ever for the 535d!
I think they must have had the handbrake on.
The official BMW 0-100kmh is 6.5 seconds and thats supposed to be very conservative also a little political as they don't want the diesel model to outshine the petrol models in both performance and economy.

This is a draft of a letter im going to send to BMW
RE: e46 M3 / M3 CSL
Dear BMW, it has recently come to my attention that the 535d produced by yourself is an easy match for the e46 m3 that you also manufacture. The 535d it around 350kg (fully specced) heavier than the M3 CSL, has a slower gearbox, has no limited slip differential, has no slick tires, has no perfect 50:50 weight disturbition, has NO m dynamic driving mode, is very nose heavy because of the weight of the diesel engine, produces 89 less horsepower, only revs to 5000rpm... And yet is just as quick as an m3 around a tracK??
In respect of the evidence presented above i see it in bmw's interest to replace the e46 M3 with the 535d , and re-lable the 535 as the ///m3
what do you think ?

Fact is (and it's interesting to me) the top gear chaps lapped the standard M3 (don't know if this was SMG) in the same time that the lapped a 535d (don't know what transmission this had).
Bettermakeway has advised that although this was on the same track in similar conditions the 'Stigs' were not the same - which might be a factor.
However, there seems to be quite strong evidence that the 535d and the M3 can be made to go round the top gear track at similar speeds. As I say, I expect some people from BMW already know this even if they don't watch top gear

Obviously the CSL is faster, but a remapped 535d is also faster.... and from what others seem to be saying (and the top gear test) the 545i is faster on a track than the 535d (and so possibly faster than an M3).
Perhaps this is why BMW are producing a new V8 m3 - just a thought - maybe they didn't feel the 535d was a proper replacement.

Both incredible cars. Doesn't really matter who's faster. Biggest issue we have here in the US is no choice - can't get the diesels here, doesn't look like we will for a while. Very happy with my V8 but would seriously consider the diesel next time around if they were available here.
