Ok, I really don't care exactly how fast the 535d or 545i is since I have neither of them. The only thing that made me suspicious was the figuers you posted where the 535d was much slower than what BMW states and were a (your) 545i was much faster than BMW states.

Don't get me wrong here, I don't mistrust you. I do just find it strange how much the numbers differs.

Thanks for posting the results. Your provided some great comparisons. grogan545 and I have been beating all magazines regularly. I am not sure what the answer is except that we are dedicated and, as you mention, we have figured out how to get the most out of our cars. And, hmmm, yes, the two German mags differ greatly on their test results. I have no way to reconcile the data. But, no matter how you look at it, the results you posted put the 535d and the 545i, mine or the one tested, much closer together. I am going to see if BMW Germany also links the test that you found. I was thinking that it only linked one 535d test. You would think the Company would want to link the best test. Go figure. The US mags reported the data below. The second chart implies the comparability we have. I added the comparable data from your post to the US mag data. So, to add to the confusion, it looks like the US mags got considerably better results for the 545i than did the German mag your reported on. So, now that we have cleared all this up, ... But, still, I think the evidence strongly implies that the545i is faster.

This is a draft of a letter im going to send to BMW

RE: e46 M3 / M3 CSL

Dear BMW, it has recently come to my attention that the 535d produced by yourself is an easy match for the e46 m3 that you also manufacture. The 535d it around 350kg (fully specced) heavier than the M3 CSL, has a slower gearbox, has no limited slip differential, has no slick tires, has no perfect 50:50 weight disturbition, has NO m dynamic driving mode, is very nose heavy because of the weight of the diesel engine, produces 89 less horsepower, only revs to 5000rpm... And yet is just as quick as an m3 around a tracK??

In respect of the evidence presented above i see it in bmw's interest to replace the e46 M3 with the 535d , and re-lable the 535 as the ///m3

what do you think ?

and on a similar note i posed the question "Can a 535d be as quick around the track as an E46 M3 SMG?" to

1: Valentin Popov, chief mechanic for BMW bulgaria
- He laughed for about 10 minues and thanked me for making his day ... he knows nothing.
2: Klaus Dietrich, one of the chief designers of the e46 m3, particularly the suspension, which was visiting Kamor's dealership to train mechanics...
-must have laughted for about an hour.. i got tired of waiting for a reply

oh and the bugger didnt tell me anything about the e90 m3..

Or to put it another way...

So how much faster is the 535d compared to the 545i? (Or should that be M3, M3CSL + raft of other irrelevant vehicles)

Hopefully that sums it up nicely...

BMW's reply will be: -

Dear 700700 (if that is your real name)

Yes we know but don't tell everyone![u]
