let me rephrase that actually ...
545 "WAS" available in the UK... replaced with 550i.
but don't knwo WHERE you get that BMW haven't sold 545i's for 2 years in the UK. Bizarre quote!

i'm in no doubt that a 535D is quick, and that a remapped 535D would keep up with, maybe even beat a 545 marginally..
for me the diff in the cars is in the drivers preference. i wanted an engine that sounded nice, and revved past 5k. i wanted the M, but wife won't drive anything but autos. so 545 was the choice at the time.
B5 would be my choice now however!

i reckon a DMS545 would take the DMS535D however... but i think all would be close. v close.
Having checked the BMW website, their are a few 2003 model 545i's & one 2004 model. Oddly enough, their is also a late 2005 model 55 reg (a bit of an oddball really), however i guess this was an un-registered car for quite some time. No idea exactly when the 550i replaced the 545i, but it appears to be around the end of 2003/early 2004 so 18ish months ago would be my guess, although i guess their was some stock for a while.

As i said earlier, i agree that a DMS 545i would take a DMS 535D but not by a huge margin.

And back to the topic: IMO it's hard to say who is faster, the 545i or the 535d. Also IMO as a general rule, if you want, the petrol might be faster under all conditions BUT insignificantly. Also a remaped diesel would spank the petrol but in a way that's not fair. It's devilish enough but not fair. A remaped petrol would put it again into battle keeping the same pattern as stock vs stock.
All this discussion started from bashing the diesel, wich imo is DEADLY wrong since this is after all one heck of a fast car, for it's set-up and economy orientation. Bashing the diesel in any way is not right since it deserves the oposite, the respect, since it got compared to, not long ago, the fastest 5er (except obvsiusly the m5). Vice versa the v8 petrol deserves respect in return because it can keep up with the diesel even though it's na, assuring it's advantage by displacement and set-up. Either way, you can't go wrong. Be it the petrol with it's superb refinement and melody or the lucifer of all diesels, or as i like to call it the diesel m5.

I give up then.

I'm selling my DMS 535D & off tomorrow to but a 545i.

Think i may even crawl back to Audi's they were far more straight forward & i knew all about their range & history.

The 550i was available from at least mid 2005, as that's when i first looked at E60's, so if the 550i replaced the 545i then how can BMW still have been selling the 545i in the UK, unless it was just old stock?? I'd swear both were not on the BMW website when i looked mid 2005.

I believe the story about the CSL being beaten by a DMS fettled 535d. This was on a road not a track.

The M3 is the ultimate e46 - a lightweight budget 'supercar' the 535d is a high speed executive cruiser. The M3 is 300kg lighter, 400mm shorter with a narrower wheelbase. In comparison the 535d is a BIG car.

The M3 really SHOULD have the edge and it is a HUGE complement to the handling of the e60 that there is any comparison at all.

These are the top gear lap times (flawed as they are the good point is that they are for the same circuit and driver):

BMW 535d - 1.31.8

BMW M3 - 1.31.8

M3 and the (unfettled) 535d are ...... the same .... (ok you'll all complain about rain conditions etc... but you have to admit it must be a close match).

BMW M3 CSL - 1.28.0

It's faster - but faster than a dms tuned 535d (dunno)

Now somewhere on this post it said that the 545i beat the 535d by 3 secs either way we don't know for sure cause they didn't do a stig power lap in the 545i.

BTW check out the Golf R32 time - 1.30.4 - faster than the M3 - flippin heck - I'm thinking of getting one.

Sure, a 1680kg car with lets say 300hp will beat a 1380kg car with 360hp on the straight.
I've driven both and there is no way this will happen unless the csl is driven by a moron. End of story.

No lets say 344bhp and 506ftlbs of torque

as per autoexpress.co.uk...........http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/evo_data/the_knowledge/?5

And I wouldnt mock the owner of such a car that is the epitome of the //M machinery.

Yeah but not a DMS 535d...wich from what people tell it feels ALOT faster.

Also i don't think there are morons who drive CSLs...at least i like to think that way.
I think it's possible.
