I know.. sounds like a very strange comparison. I've ordered my 550i already but I've always had a place in my heart for SUVs.

BMW 550i vs Range Rover Sport HSE. Both are about the same $$$. Actually, the RRS ends up being a bit less.

I know this is kind of a strange comparison but I've always loved SUVs.

I have about a 70 mile (all highway) round-trip commute to work so road noise at high speeds and comfort are very important to me. For that reason, I just assumed a car was more practical than an SUV.

Besides the obvious (BMW has better gas mileage and is faster), what would you say about overall comfort and feel of the RRS vs. a BMW 5-series?

What about the poor reliability, resale value and general quality? There are three people in my Company who have gotten rid of them after les than a year. And they have all had Leases on them and lost their shirt! A lot of money for an upmarket Ford.

This is probably going to sound confusing... I've always believed that there are two kinds of people...the ones that like SUV and the ones that like sedans. I believe people who like SUV keep buying SUV, and the ones who like sedans keep buying sedans. I have always owned a sedan...never liked SUV'S and never felt as secure in an SUV.
If you like SUV, stick with it....

Bobbin-Man,
Just curious, but if they are so bad, why do you keep buying them?
They've progressively become worse - we still own the Freelander and it'll be the last

LR were good at simple technology and ruggedness. As they've moved into higher tech vehicles (the modern world?) they're an also-ran when compared to the likes of BMW, Toyota, etc etc.

The RRS is very appealing, but I doubt anyone would buy one twice?

BMW sold Rover as they couldn't make it work. I'm sure that the current model, now Ford owned I think, is better with BMW engineering. But having seem the problems and the number of times taken to the dealer, I would NEVER buy one.

AFAIK, the RRS is a disco in a dress. Not a "real" RR. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

A 550i will be faster, and more fun to drive.

I have a 2006 BMW 530i and a 2005 Land Rover LR3 HSE. I work for the US in Germany so I have really had the opportunity to test the capabilities of both vehicles. The Range Rover Sport and the LR3 differ only in their look and price. Structurally and mechanically, they are the same vehicle which made me very skeptical to spend an extra 10,000, because it carried the Range Rover tag. I believe the RRS is actually a tad heavier than the LR3 which means the gas consumption will be more atrocious. I average no better than 12 miles to the gallon on the average. Of course, highway driving here is done at over 100mph. I cannot complain about wind noise and handling is car-like on the Land Rover. When I say car-like, I don't mean BMW-like, though. I was recently in the States and had a Chrysler 300M as a rental car. Over 100mph the Land Rover was a better, more secure ride than that Chrysler. At slower speeds the Land Rover is also superior. If I needed a vehicle for a 70 mile commute, I would opt for a 530i, personally. Sure the 550i would be a funner option, and I considered it, as it would have only been an extra $5000 dollars for me to go with a 550i over a 530i with our government pricing, however looking back at the last two weeks I was in the States, I would have never been able to enjoy the capabilities of 360hp. Both the 530i and the 550i top out at 150mph. Their 0-60 is a little under a second difference, but their fuel consumption is greatly different. back yo your dilemma though, it sounds like for your application the BMW may be better suited. think about a fill up every 3-4 days versus every other day. That will add to your already long commute. Oh, by the way both of my vehicles have the Logic 7 system and navigation. Rovers navigation is superior, but BMW's Logic 7 is by far better. The Rover's have a very poor setup for their Logic 7. The subwoofer is horrible and the lack of insulation and heavy use of plastic is a rattling nightmare. On the 5 series comfort seats make all the difference in the world. The Rover seats you will feel after 45 minutes. I have driven a RRS both Supercharged and regular. NO NOTICEBLE DIFFERENCE, except in ride quality due to oversized tires on the supercharged model. I have not had any problems with my Land Rover (13,000 miles), other than the speaker rattling. NO FIX THOUGH! With the BMW, the only problem I have had is that the steering wheel came off center a tad. Since I waited more than 1200 miles to reported they won't fix under warranty, but that is because here in Germany there is a total lack of customer serivce and customer commitment amongst businesses, because competition is limited.
Hopefully this helps and if you have any questions let me know. I have access to the Range Rover line, as I have a friend that works for the dealership here that sells to American personnel.

Great feedback from everyone. Thank you!

I am an "SUV" guy and I have 3 kids under 5 years-old but I'm going with my gut.. I will wait for my 550i. I'm sure it's going to be more fun to drive and smoother for the long rides.

Thanks again for everyone's input..

Now... can anyone make my car get here faster????

Great choice, I'm sure you will be most happy with this car.
