Daytona Violet E34 BMW M5 Touring

Gorgeous Daytona Violet E34 M5 features a manual transmission, black interior, and a price tag that’ll make you cry.

Something pops up for sale every once in a while that makes you question every vehicle purchase you’ve ever made. “If I hadn’t bought this, I might have been able to buy that,” thoughts will certainly be running through your head. It’s not just an E34 M5. It’s a Touring model (for those unaware, that is the wagon designation). That isn’t the craziest part of the story, either. It’s a manual Daytona Violet E34 M5 touring, and it is disrespectfully cool. This is not a combo you’re likely to come up for sale again unless it’s this car. There’s only one thing stopping most of us from owning it, and that is undoubtedly the price tag.

This gorgeous staple of BMW unicorn rarity recently appeared for sale in a station-wagon-specific Facebook group called Wagon Elitist Jerks. The seller Michael Messineo states that the car has around 100,000 original miles and holds a clean Montana title. The asking price is a cool $62,995. Honestly, that doesn’t seem at all out of the question.

Despite the Mileage, It’s in Incredible Shape

This gorgeous E34 M5 is in seemingly flawless condition from tip to tail. Sure, there’s a bit of aging visible on the seats in the form of cracks. However, that’s to be expected, considering the car is nearly three decades old and was actually driven.

If the price seems out of line despite the condition, allow us to get you up to speed. An E34 M5 in its own right is a fairly rare and desirable car. However, the standard sedan variant doesn’t hold a candle to the rarity of the Touring wagon.

According to BMW M, the E45 M5 Touring was described by BMW as “a superlative sportscar, packed in a sporty, but never showy bodywork.” Only 891 E54 M5 Touring examples ever left the factory, spanning its run from 1992 to 1995. As with other instances, too, the Daytona Violet paint job makes it exceptionally rare despite its already incredibly limited production.

Additionally, the E34 M5 Touring served as a special stepping stone in the production of the legendary McLaren F1.

A Living Legacy

Additionally, the E34 M5’s powerplant served as the original engine for the iconic BMW M1 supercar, too.

Under the hood of the production models is a 3.8-liter inline-six S38 engine. The S38 features individual throttle bodies and was good for an almost unbelievable for its time 340 horsepower output. This power plant, combined with the manual transmission, is enough to propel this beautiful wagon from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 5.9 seconds. Again, while that may not seem all that impressive by today’s standards, it was remarkable upon its release in 1992. Especially considering the fact that it’s a station wagon.

Overall, the price tag of $63,000 may seem steep to some. However, it’s a remarkable deal for perhaps one of the rarest pieces of BMW history there is. In fact, as unbelievable as it may seem, not too long ago, we saw one of these fetch $65,000 on Bring A Trailer. That one had more miles and seemed to be in less stellar condition, too.
